Stream titles, song titles, but no music

Postby Jezebelle » Sat Nov 11, 2017 3:00 pm

For the past day or so, my Windows/gaming machine has been unable to play streaming music from GSP or a couple other random streaming services I tried. Just whatever Google came up with. The stream titles and song titles are displayed and updated just fine, but the music doesn't connect. GSPplayer says it's timing out. The web player says it's connecting... then stalled... and just repeats that. Other Sonixcast streams do similar things with their various links. Same story in VLC.

SoundCloud works fine. YouTube works fine. My Kindle on the same network (plus a wireless hub) was able to tune in to GSP just fine.

I'm guessing it's a Windows thing, but Windows has /so many/ "things" I don't know where to start. I'm using Windows 7 and I haven't /intentionally/ updated anything lately. I certainly haven't changed any hardware. I doubt I've even run any notable updates, even automatically, since Windows 7 "important" security rollups have never once successfully installed on this machine. Windows Firewall is disabled because I have a hardware firewall. Yes, I checked that too, but the Kindle is inside that and has no problems. Windows Defender is disabled because I have BitDefender. I disabled that too, temporarily, and it made no difference.

What else could cause Windows to fail to connect to certain streaming /music/ without interfering with the stream titles and song titles? What else should I check?

About half the stations on internet-radio.com start playing instantly, and the other half don't play at all. I think there might be a clue there, if only they would actually show more details that might indicate what the clue is. Maybe it's a ShoutCast vs. IceCast thing, since they apparently list both and don't identify which station is which.

Nope. That wasn't it. I went to ShoutCast.com and IceCast.com and played a bunch of stations on each. The /only/ thing I heard on any of them was the promo Radionomy.com plays before any of their streams, so that's a fixed sound file, not a stream. That played from beginning to end every time, and then went silent.

SoundCloud and Slacker and YouTube play on demand, not live streaming. And those all work.

I tried at least dozen each on ShoutCast.com and IceCast.com and none of them worked.

Some stations on Internet-Radio.com work, and I can't tell why. As far as I can tell, they only have ShoutCast and IceCast servers, but some of them work and I can't find others that work or find and indication of the difference.

Do you have mobile internet and do stations that don't play on your pc play on your mobile (cell) phone?
You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

That's a good question. It's not exactly "mobile". I have a Kindle connected wirelessly to the same lan as my PC. The past few days, I've been using the Kindle to tune in to GSP because the PC can't. I didn't test that with any of the other stations my PC couldn't play yet. Let's see... I made a list here...

Doesn't work on PC, plays fine on Kindle:

http://uk1.internet-radio.com:8004/stream
http://pulseedm.cdnstream1.com:8124/1373_128

http://192.99.139.128:20088/stream
http://192.99.62.212:20142/stream
http://uk5.internet-radio.com:8185/stream
http://93.100.61.75:8016/
http://77.92.76.190:9155/;
http://77.92.76.190:9160/;

http://99.198.118.250:8212/stream/coop.ogg
http://cast4.audiostream.com.br:8657/aac

On PC, plays a fixed ad first, then silence. On Kindle, pops up an error about blocking something, maybe plays the ad for the branded apps, then silence:

http://streaming210.radionomy.com:80/RADIOFAUSTEX5
http://streaming206.radionomy.com:80/Popschleuder

Plays on both:

http://108.61.154.147:5984/
http://us2.internet-radio.com:8046/
http://us1.internet-radio.com:11094/

http://81.88.36.42:8030/
http://212.96.160.160:8022/
http://uk3.internet-radio.com:11014/
http://81.18.165.235:80/
http://23.29.71.154:8226/
http://64.71.79.181:8018/
http://radio.jphip.com:8800/
http://broadcast.rantradio.com:8888/

Nothing with a mountpoint works, but not everything without a mountpoint works.

Taking the mountpoint off the url, an html page is displayed offering status and links and javascript players and whatnot, and following those links to a playlist file that contains the stream listed here with the mountpoint, doesn't connect at all on the PC. Exactly the same as what happens when I just tell VLC to open that stream location. Doing the same thing with the Kindle's Firefox and XiaaLive plays normally. Xiia doesn't allow manual stream location entry.

Every link that worked was one I found on internet-radio.com. But not everything on internet-radio.com works.

I don't see any way to tell what's different about the streams that do work.

I've run "sfc /scannow" and it found no problems. I'm going to run full slow virus scans overnight. I downloaded a fresh copy of bass.dll, but it's apparently only currently present in my Chrome directory. BASSMOD.dll is in my system folder. Maybe I should locate a source for that and replace it?

still seems like a firewall issue on your desktop to me or possible a need of a hard refresh on your browser.

Windows Firewall is disabled. I don't trust it. I have a proper firewall at the lan gateway, and that's not stopping my Kindle from playing all those stations.

How would my browser prevent GSPplayer from connecting or prevent VLC from directly opening a stream? I could try it, I guess. I could back up my preferences, uninstall and reinstall both Chrome and Firefox, then try all those links before restoring my preferences, but I don't see the connection. If I can't find anything else to try, I may as well try that.

It's working again. I'm not entirely sure why.

I put a fresh new copy of bass.dll in my system folders, where there wasn't one, and nothing was generating error messages about it. That shouldn't be it.

I ran a virus scan that claimed to find nothing it could fix, just two things it couldn't, and offered not even a link to the directories if I wanted to do something about it myself. That shouldn't have been it.

I ran sfc /scannow and it found no damaged system files, so it changed nothing. That shouldn't have been it.

I tested a whole bunch of streams with a bunch of different players and opened the same streams successfully on my Kindle and waved that about as if "showing" how to do it would have some effect. That probably wasn't it.

I rebooted for a third time after making all those no changes at all. That shouldn't have been it.

We're now closer to American Thanksgiving than Halloween. That really shouldn't be it.

BitDefender wasted 6 hours recursively scanning the same directory because Windows 7 has a "junction point" in it that loops to the same directory. So I uninstalled BitDefender and installed AVG again. Since BitDefender never logged that it was blocking anything and never notified me of anything being blocked and has no options or controls for blocking audio streams in the first place and just disabling BitDefender didn't change anything before, there's no reason that should have had any effect. But that was probably it.

Whatever it was, at least it's fixed.

glad it works, and now you are making me re-think my virus protection choice. Had bitdefender for a while now. haven't had any issues with it. AVG managed to piss me off a bunch.

I've had AVG and Avast! in the past and dropped them for various reasons, but they recently merged. Now they have the same detection systems, the best from each, but keep familiar interfaces and extra tools from each. And the same "register annually" deal from Avast! So I figured I'd give AVG another try and see if they fixed what I didn't like about it years ago. It has notified me once so far that my PC is cluttered and inefficient and their paid version could clean it up, but as long as it doesn't nag about it, I can forgive that.

Okay, so AVG Free version does like to advertise itself a little too much, but there's an up side to that, really. If it hawks some upgrade or add-on once a day, at least that reminds me that it's there, it's working, and if something were wrong, that would be an alert popup. Maybe if it gets /too/ annoying, I'll try Avast! again instead, but I'm sure there's got to be some tradeoff to that one, too.

The native one that Microsoft have in Windows is fine, it can be aggressive sometimes an flag certain files but that is rare (NoCD cracks for old CD games for example that I need since I stopped using CD-ROM a few years ago now.)
I never run attached shit in spam so I've never tested if it catches that.
Do note that it's not the best AV out there. It's "average".

In Windows 10 at least I don't even notice it's there. Only times I notice it's in my system is when Windows Update downloads a Windows Defender update low ram and cpu use etc.
ESET NOD32 is supposed (or was) one of the best at least. One cracker was quoted as saying it was a pain in the ass to try and circumvent it etc as NOD32 caught up very quickly.

There's also a test of AV software here https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/ for Win7/8/10.

Ahnlab is a Korean AV no english version which is a shame as they have a free version.

However Avira has a free version of their AV which also scored max on the AV-Test site. https://www.avira.com/en/free-antivirus-windows
