I mean, seriously, come on. They got this guy back for obvious insurance fraud. Good for them, for putting the smackdown on those who cheat the system.

Like the insurance companies don't cheat along with as well? They were dumb enough to insure smokeable items from fire. Tacz, when was the the last time your Rebublican parents smacked you upside the head for being the doofus on a wierd sled contraption? Doobya just made class action lawsuit's pretty much dead, so kill the legitation process. Doobya says well dont tramp on me, until it involves tramping on my interest (OIL!). The rich insurance companies only bring up problems when they have to PAY. I say that dude was (just as the original post topic says), too smart for his own good. Go buy a house Tacz, then when a major thunderstorm blows through and knocks half of a 10 ton tree on to your house, then see if the insurance is on your side...pfft! I might outta shut up right about now.

But, I'm not picking on you Tacz...didn't mean it to sound that way. Just that this topic effects homeowners, such as myself. I smoke cigarettes for example, so my health insurance is higher (of course), but so is my house insurance, and my car insurance. How about some freaking "Dumb asses that talk on their phone in their car while driving insurance"? The Insurance companies don't work for you, they work for them, or maybe some "Drinking and Driving Insurance" Insurance companies would go out of business if it wasnt for drunk drivers......and they might save you up to 15% too, if it wasnt for that damn CGI'd GECKO.

/rant off oh wait...I never put a /rant on

Oh, ok. Now I get it. And all this time I thought it was wrong, at least on some tiny moral level, to intentionally try to fuck someone or some company out of money that isn't yours. Now I see the light though. If person or company X isn't nice, it's ok for me to try fuck them over. It's all so clear now...

Used Car dealerships
All the ones I can't remember

Not that I ever imagined you as a hotbed of morality, but ya pretty much. It has nothing to do if they are "nice" or not. And if an insurance company willingly decides to INSURE something as moronic as CIGARS against FIRE, meaning that they wanted to COLLECT a premium on it each month, then I don't see it as "fucking" them out of money that isn't yours....call it a stupidity tax. Anybody who thinks that insurance companies are "here to protect you", prolly hasn't paid a dime of insurance, because once it actually comes time for them to pay up, they don't without a fight.

I can see why you would protect cigars against fire. Like they said in the article, its just drawing a line with "unacceptable fire."

You honestly believe this guy did nothing wrong in any way, and that the insurance company is fully at fault and deserved to get jacked like that? They gave the man a policy that was clearly intended to protect against things like a house fire. Every party involved knew that. This guy decided from the start to screw the insurance company, and he got what he deserved.

Why do you think insurance companies are so cautious to pay out? Why do you think rates are so high? Because of jackasses like this guy. Good god, think about it for a minute.

I may not be a "hotbed of morality", but I do know the difference between right and moronically-wrong.

Well there's fucking with the Insurance Companies & then there's fucking with the Insurance Companies.

While I know they are mainly out to make a profit, and certain ones might do that with dubiously fringe-legal attitudes you can only try and stick it to them certain ways without crossing the line. Across that line is Insurance Fraud which is a crime. It's all well and good to want them screwed until you end up in a cell with Bubba.

I'm more likely to get upset about people frauding insurance companies because that makes it more expensive for ALL of us who have to buy insurance. That, and fraud makes the insurance companies more cautious about paying out on legitimate claims for fear they're getting scammed. So trying to take advantage of the system just comes back to bite *everybody* in the ass in the end.

No, I do think the guy was completely at fault and prolly got what he deserved, but I also think the insurance company was too hasty in wanting to collect their premium by covering something as silly as cigars against fires. Even if you go spend 1000 bucks for a good Cuban, you sure the hell ain't gonna stick in a box somewhere and put an insurance policy on it. You are going to light that baby up and enjoy it. I just lean more to what Boinky said, even if that guy got jail time, the insurance company got exactualy what they deserved by having to pay out. If they would have made a wiser decision by declining to cover some of the shizznat that they do, then there would be less people trying to commit insurance fraud in the first place.....which would keep everybody's rates down. The more oppurtunity you give someone to make a free buck, the more dinglebats out there are going to try it.

As a company, I can offer a product if noone will buy it. This will run me out of business. But with an insurance company, they sell intellectual goods, and thusly, they can offer products that noone will need, and will only have to render services in very rare situations, but still get money. As a consumer, in the case of intellectual goods (insurance policies and the like) it's your option to buy insurance for something silly, like volcanoe insurance. You don't have to give them the money, it's your choice, but they don't mind that you're GIVING them money that they'll never need to pay back.
