So um, not really sure if this goes here or what, but I guess it can be moved if there's a more appropriate place. Anyways, I have a freebie account (for the moment) so I can't post on the official boards, but since I was somehow drawn here, I figured I might as well ask if there are any (safe) places that a fairly lowbie character could go to observe some roleplaying goings-ons while also amazing you with my absurdly long and ramble-ridden sentences. Ahh... Lost my train of thought. Oh yeah. I've been listening to the old media archives and listening to the RP-ish things going on, but since they're like two years old, I was wondering if any of this stuff is still going on. :P

Usually in the MMORPGs I've played in the past, the roleplaying community has either mutated into a horrible, life-sucking, do-it-our-way-or-be-ousted, social club of, uh, scary people, or dried up and compacted into little individual clusters of people doing their own thing. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me the general situation here (I'm on Atlantean).

In my experience, these guys won't care if your RP'ing or not. I prefer it if you do, because that way I feel its more fun, but its your choice. Your "Safe-Spot" to check out the situation is definitley Reets-Retreat when theres a party goin' down.

not that there would be much rp on those partys.

If you're talking ingame, there's not many still around that RP very actively, but some. Bootay might have a better idea of some good ones. Nanomage Liberation Front is the biggest Neut guild into RP I know of.

Yikes. That isn't very encouraging. :P

Is AO still worth it social-wise to stick around for a long haul? Questing to obtain phat lewt and high levels is only appealing for so long. :(

It depends on your view of it my friend. Some find that it is. Others like myself, have said their goodbyes. It's what you put in it. As mentioned above I think Boo' knows most bout the RP'ers. There are some orgs that are better than others but we shan't get into that. Suffice to say Midnight Revieries (or what ever) was force disbanded by FC today, much to the enjoyment of every high lvl org in game. After several ninja lootings and ninja delitings of end game raid loot ARK finally did som'n bout all the complaints... But that's got nothing to do with what you said, simply thought I'd share ^^

Roleplay is very much alive so long as you know how to find it. I can't imagine that AO is really any different than any other MMORPG in that respect. Some off the top of my head suggestions for roleplay-intensive orgs...

Clan - Whisper's Edge, Clan Assembly

Neutral - Nanomage Liberation Front

Omni - RUR, People's Republic of Redemption, Society of Salvation

Then there are orgs that certainly don't frown on roleplay, and often provide a balance of things to members (Unity of the Rose, Valor Eternal, First Light, The Mockers, Circle G...hell, I know I'm forgetting some...)

A good place to get references and contacts would be the Atlantian (or Rimor if that's where you're playing) forums on the AO official site.

**WARNING**
What is about to be stated is my own opinion, and might not reflect the opinions, or maybe it does, of my fellow orgmates. This is my version, and opinion, based on what i know and what I have heard and seen.

Society of Salvation, in my opinion, is not a roleplay org. We do speak in character when we are in org chat, anything else has to have (( ))'s around it... ( I HATE THOSE PARENTHESIS!! ) The People's Republic of Redemption formed after presidential leadership changed hands a bit, pending some rl events. They were the main RP element in SoS, and split off to form what is now TPRoR. Frankly when I heard about this decision , i was a little shocked and bothered, though i was not there to witness what happened first hand... :? I personally did not think it should have happened, but what could i have done... *shrug*

All i know is that, In my opinion, SoS would fit in the 4th category of what Veldron has said to be orgs that do not frown on roleplay.

My Two bits... :)

Based on the responses, it seems like the various roleplaying groups have split up into their own private units. Do these RP Orgs interact with each other or are they each doing their own thing for the most part? Or did I completely misunderstand? :P
I'm not really interested in joining any specific group. More like seeking social interactions with random people who would also be speaking from their character's perspective rather than the player's. :D

... Does that still exist?

Yes.

Again, as suggested above, trying the clubs is often a good start. I wasn't relating those orgs so much as a suggestion to join one, but rather a list of places to look in finding fellow roleplayers.

Consistantly finding roleplayers in an MMORPG, especially one without a roleplay exclusive server (although, even those aren't exactly successful in my experience)...can be a chore at times.

I wish you luck. :)

Okay, here we go....

RP Orgs are pretty much as Veldron described, although SoS is NOT what I'd call an RP org anymore since the RPers mostly split to become the People's Republic of Redemption (which I highly recommend to Omni RPers)

Omni:
The Honored Maidens
The People's Republic of Redemption
RUR (Rubika Universal Robots)

Orgs with some RPers in them that sometimes actually RP still:
OmniPol (Jadeshimmer is the Omni RP Godess of OP!!!!)

Neutral:

Nanomage Liberation Front (If you like RPed conflict and skullduggery JOIN THEM!)

Orgs with some RPers in them that sometimes actually RP still:
Circle G (There are still some RPers left there, though they are starving for more)
Desert Winds (eco terrorists from the olden times)

Clans:
The Black Company (Astera & Stefano will hook you up with RP goodness! Hardcore militant Silverstone followers.)
Clan Assembly (Haven't had too much contact with them but every meeting has been in the RP category and very enjoyable)
Universal Church of Bootay (micro-org 100% RP, active on weekends)

Orgs with some RPers in them that sometimes actually RP still:
First Light - CoT member
The Mockers (active RP in a half n half gamer/RPer org) - CoT member
Whisper's Edge - CoT member

There are more that have RPers in them, but they don't come to mind immediately. Those above are the ones I see the most action out of. All of the orgs I've mentioned are excellent, as are many that didn't get mentioned due to their lack of RPers. Bear in mind that you don't have to belong to an RP org to RP. RP is still occurring between different orgs, though you may not always recognize it unless you're paying attention out on the streets and in the clubs.

I'd say that the game is still quite worth the long haul for RPers. I'm STILL here and RP is what I play for. Those orgs listed that have RPers still active in them can always use more good RPers in their ranks and will welcome them with open arms. I encourage you to investigate them with as much open mindedness as those orgs that have larger RP populations, as the more RPers that join their ranks, the more RP friendly an environment/org becomes.

The social scene in AO is very much thriving, even among non-RPers. Paries are common where you can meet and mingle with folks. Friendships are a common byproduct of running with Reetheads at GSP parties.

/hugs!

Rumor has it that they have already reformed under the name Friends United (FC). Not at all surprising. However I have this newly born faith that FC will shut them down again if they keep behaving the way they did as MR, and go a step further in banning the org leaders. Wouldn't THAT be a hoot?

I don't know that FU FC still exists for obvious reasons.

I know Haminie is under the org "Somber Chaos" now.

LOL wonder how many namechanges that org's going to go through. They did indeed reform under Fruends United (FC), then switched to Divine Reveries... and now Somber Chaos? Tssk tskk.

What was so bad about this clan that made the other high-level organizations want them disbanded? For those of us who haven't been on-world in a while.

The usual. Griefing, Ninjalooting, deleting loot off The Beast and other raidmobs after Ninja'ing just to stop others from getting stuff from them, ganking/disrupting raids, etc.

Methinks they should reform again with a new guild name - Please FC Don't Ban Us
