Question: How does it work?

Postby Dasch » Tue Oct 30, 2012 5:40 pm

Hey y'all,
I've had a look throug the FAQ and the boards here, but I'm still curious. If I missed the bits ion the faq / on the boards where I'm answered, just slap me, call me a custard and point me in the right direction pls ...

I am really curious about all this. It's the first time I've ever encountered people running a digital radio station in conjunction with an MMO. It's awesome, and I want to know more, like how it works ... (So please forgive he rapidifre questions)

Your FAQ says you're not FC employees, (one Q answered before I start), but are you guys pro DJs, skilled amateurs (or both?) ?

Are you guys gamers first or DJs first?

In spending a few hours a week onyour shows, do you still have time to grind APs / NMs / Lairs?

Is this a paying job for you, or is it all FoC and forthe love of music and the game?

how do you stream your broadcast out across the big wide t'internet?

Do you use your own music collection, or does GSP have a central resource? (or somethng else entirely?)

Lastly (I say lastly - but I may think of more, or bounce more off your answers - if y'all don't tell me to shut up that is :) )
What does it take to be a DJ (not specifically a GSP DJ, although that would be cool to know too)?

I shall try to answer these questions, though some of them are DJ specific and I am one of the people who handles some of the miscellaneous duties behind the stage, so to speak.

Your FAQ says you're not FC employees, (one Q answered before I start), but are you guys pro DJs, skilled amateurs (or both?) ?
A bit of both, if I recall, from both the AO installation and TSW one. I do believe the latter is favored.

Are you guys gamers first or DJs first?
That is more of a specific question for the DJs, but being that we are streaming out of an MMO, I could state that there is a significant love of both here, though obviously, there is a great passion for music here... which does - generally - come first. I mean, that is what GSP is here for. Music and entertainment. :)

In spending a few hours a week on your shows, do you still have time to grind APs / NMs / Lairs?

It varies on the DJ. They would have to answer that. :) Me, personally? I find time. :)

Is this a paying job for you, or is it all FoC and for the love of music and the game?
For the love of the music and the game. And our listeners! :)

how do you stream your broadcast out across the big wide t'internet?
Shoutcasting. Perhaps one of the DJs could clarify on that a bit better.

Do you use your own music collection, or does GSP have a central resource? (or somethng else entirely?)
DJs use their own music collection.

What does it take to be a DJ (not specifically a GSP DJ, although that would be cool to know too)?
Well, obviously, a love of music. A style of a show. Themes help. Developing a voice for radio, which means having good diction and just... I really don't know how to describe it. Some people just sound really really great on the air. Perhaps some of the DJs could pipe in here. As far as becoming a GSP DJ, well, we do have an application. But you'd be best served getting in contact with Vallikat here on the forums (A private message, perhaps) or in the game or dropping a line here.

Ooh another question. (And shameless self promotion). My band has an album (on iTunes spotify etc) how do I get it on your play lists?
Link it. :) That is the first step. We generally support talent from the community.

Heyyy. Thanks for taking the time to wade through that lot. It's appreciated :)

Happy to link my band.
I will add it's sadly now split (before we could record a second album too - although I have the demos we did for it)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/pyrid ... mpt=uo%3D4

(it may be cheaper from spotify, amazon, or CD baby)

I didn't ask what it takes to be a DJ because I was interested in joining, I may have the perfect face for radio, but my voice would work easily as a cure for insomnia, I'm terribly monotone I think.
That said there is a side of me that says go for it lol.

Heh, I posted to ask questions anytime before seeing that you already had! :) Io answered most of this already, but I'll add in my answers also...

Your FAQ says you're not FC employees, (one Q answered before I start), but are you guys pro DJs, skilled amateurs (or both?) ?

I think most of use would be very happy to be called "skilled amateurs." ;) Some of us (myself included) have some schooling or job history in broadcasting or DJ'ing, but many of our DJ's do not have previous experience.

Are you guys gamers first or DJs first?

That's a hard question to answer. I think as the Director, I'll have to say that I put what we do at GSP first. I'm a serious gamer though, so that's a big part of my life.

In spending a few hours a week onyour shows, do you still have time to grind APs / NMs / Lairs?

I keep pretty busy with the Director stuff, but I find time to play when and where I can. I'll never keep up with the hardcore TSW players (nor do I care to), but I find time to enjoy the game with friends. :)

Is this a paying job for you, or is it all FoC and forthe love of music and the game?

It's all for the love of music and the community. It can be a very rewarding hobby, but not financially. :D

how do you stream your broadcast out across the big wide t'internet?

We use Shoutcast or SAM broadcaster (DJ preference) and utilize Loudcity as our royalty service to make sure we're legal. So, we have DJ's from all over the world streaming from their homes.

Do you use your own music collection, or does GSP have a central resource? (or somethng else entirely?)

Each DJ has their own collection of music.

Lastly (I say lastly - but I may think of more, or bounce more off your answers - if y'all don't tell me to shut up that is :) )
What does it take to be a DJ (not specifically a GSP DJ, although that would be cool to know too)?

I think Io's answer hit the nail on the head here. :)
I may be retired, but I'm GridStream for life.
