Enough foul necromancer! Let the dead rest!

Despite the odd laugh at what we all thought about half a year ago, forum necromancy (eg. going back to comment on topics more than a month old) usually serves no purpose other than to spam the forums with old posts we've all read already.

I'm not pointing fingers, and I'm sorry if this sounds negative, but please let them remain dead. If it's just to write "I agree" then why? It brings back a whole lot of spam threads that clog up and drown the real new posts...
If you want to comment them, start a new thread. But not 13 a day when you could have just continued your olds ones... We all know it's tempting to just comment everything, it's even fun. But at least do it in threads that arent dated as "2003".

necromancy?
hmm I ve played both.
once i was the bodyguard of a highpriestess of mór (goddess of death) and hunted down every undead.
and once I played a zombie.
both sides are fun.

but the last one i played was a priest of narhasch (goddess of wisdom)
therefor I say:
let the dead decide themself if they wanna come back or not.

While I empathize with your plight at seeing old posts that you've already read, Oddy, I see it as a little unfair and a bit elitist to ask people not to reply to them.

They, obviously, saw the post for the first time. And it's been an ongoing debate amongst the moderators here--most of whom have been BBS junkies since before the internet--just how much of a "chat-line" we should allow our forum to be.

I see two facts:

A) The threads don't disappear after they've been dead for 5 days because there might be someone who logs on in the future who sees it for the first time, and wishes to put in their two cents. To me, this can be a little nostalgic anyway, sometimes I like to see an old topic resurrect for some further discussion.

B) It's not a chat line. And this, Oddy, is something you're just as guilty for as the rest of us: Replying to a thread with less than two words, or just a smiley-emote. :) It's just my own opinion, but that's far more annoying than thread necromancy.

We put up with both, because both retain validity. We just don't like to see either happen "too much".

I'm an Erotimancer not a Necromancer...

Hey you can Erotimancer me anytime, redness ;)

Anyway, no problems with thread necromancy. Some of the stuff that gets pulled up from it I forget about... like Schu's post. I hear he's having some computer problems now which are keeping him out of the game. That or the account finally ran out.

Anyways, it looks like the necromancy has stopped. :)

The great thread necromancy of winter '04 has ceased.

Oddy=Pot ::figure out the rest::

I partially agree Oddy, if for no other reason than when I pop in I'm usually looking for something new to spark my interest. So seeing new posts only to see that most are replies to a topic I chewed up and spat out a month ago leaves me with a hunger not sated. But some topics still retain a bit of flavor, and besides to paraphrase Tarryk "Can't they join in the discussion if they just found the darn thing?"

There's a Dilbert where he's talking to the Accountant Trolls, and they show him a list of people who are slowly changing into Trolls themselves (Wally of course was on the list - but I digress). You & I may already be Trolls, doesn't mean there aren't others out there slowly turning into ones as well.

I don't frown upon it as such. I just logged on to find 8 threads, all marked with the last comment at some point in April... And they were all top news just now. After reading them and the newest addition was "Yup" I just kinda figured it was a lil' pointless... S'pecially since the only real new thread had just been pushed out of view in favour of all the old ones.

I fully agree when you say anyone should add their 2 cents... But is it really worth it when you have to push the "Previous" button 3 times to reach the post in the first place?

I kinda see it like debating what your oppinion is on the Gore Vs Bush election. While it's fun to look back on, saying who you think is gonna win seems rather odd... But that might just be me.

I did appologise in the thread if it sounded negative, and I was in no way trying to be elitist. I just thought I'd mention it, looking back on one or two others who did the same when first entering GSP. I'm not opting for that "holier than thou" thing as I'm amongst the worst spammers we have, my count should prove that. But saving someone the "hint" later as they add 13 posts a day all saying "Hey <insert name> I just went to the toilet". And instead of replying to old posts, started a new one with every comment. I'm not bashing, but I know from one or two poeple I've talked to, that the "hint" was often taken more seriously than it was ment, and they felt rather awkward afterwards. Just thought I'd give it a heads up before it got that far.

I'm not saying it would have, but somehow, better safe than sorry jumped to mind. I might have made the wrong call tho, I dunno...

I'm sorry... can't keep quiet on this one for much longer because I see it as senseless...

There was a flash not to long ago that was pretty funny that broke down the "rules" of forum posting... i remember one of the lines were "Use the search button first to see if there is a topic before"... with soon in really big red letters saying "IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO POST IN A TOPIC PREVIOUSLY STARTED THAN TO CREATE A NEW ONE!"...

point it: if someone finds something that's interesting from a while ago - I see no problem with them finding it, pulling it up and going "Hey this was cool waaaaaaaay back when, and this is my first time seeing it, golly gee wiliker!"

I mean no offense, we are talking about old threads, OLD THREADS, not even new ones, someone made a post about someone commenting about old threads. What's the big problem move on. It's not like it is killing anyone's bandwith to move down one collum.

/bitch off.

ok, yes i am new to GSP, so :P hehe

this is the first thread that actually peeked my interest into atually posting a response. Thread Necromancy isn't all that bad, yes it can get annoying to have 1 person bring up posts form way-back-when, and have like 20-30 of em all spammed up on top of each other, saying "yep, right on, nope, meh, i disagree, i agree, etc. etc. etc." . But a lot of people actually have a valid point to bring up on the statements that were made in that old post. Yes, the CURRENT people let it die, simpley due to not haveing any other ideas to post on that topic, BUT when new blood comes in, and scan through the posts, and finds that "dead idea" then posts on it, what they say can/will/does spark new ideas in the minds of those who let it die out.

don't mean to go on-and-on here, but thread necromancy isn't all that, taken in context to what's going on, and what the post now reads. just a few words to absorb, have fun :D

PS. oops, this was thread necromancy, it was at Page 3 of the list

Isn't it terribly fitting that a thread about resurrecting dead threads would be resurrected after it had seemingly been layed to rest under the Newland Desert!?
