Okay, so the story is, I'm going to Newark for a media (scifi) convention in early November. Afterwards I'm going to spend a couple days hanging out with two of my friends who recently moved to New York City.
So.... is there anyone here who lives around NYC or has been to NYC in the past that can suggest fun stuff to do there?
My friends keep asking me what I want to do, and as I don't tend to leave Michigan much anymore, I'm really at a loss. They seem genuinly dissappointed that I'm not jumping at the chance to do something in particular (in all honesty, I'm scared to death about even being in a city that large, I'll be happy if I just live to tell about it) so I'd love to be able to surprise them and say "Hey, lets do this, I heard about it and it sounds kinda cool!"
Any suggestions?

I couldn't stand NYC, but everyone has different tastes. I'm sure Nexeus could hook ya up with some ideas.

I live right in the middle of Manhattan... there is so much to do here it's exhausting to even think about. Besides the main tourist locations like the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, various museums, etc... I suggest a few other spots:

The Village. This is a great place to hit at night. There is so much going on down there and it really gives you a taste of the fast-paced city nightlife. Bars, clubs, restaurants, you name it... the party never stops.

Southstreet Seaport. If you can stand the smell of fish... this is a nice place to spend a day. Great shops, restaurants, entertainment, etc.

Time Square is a must-see. If you come to NYC and don't visit Times Square... then you haven't experienced the city.

Little Italy. A great place to spend a few hours and get some good food. A nice taste of Italy right here in America.

If you have never been at the top of a really tall building you should go to the top of the Empire State Building

I hear they have those tall buildings, oh and taxis too (lots of em)!

*grins* Ohhh Katen there's a ton of things to do in New York City. Kioko give you a good start with the must see tourist attractions, but lemme add onto a few things.

Moma (Museum of Modern Art) comes back into the City in November and really really good. While we are talking about Museums, you should definately go to the Museum of Natural History, and the newly revamped Brooklyn Museum.

You can go to the New York Aquarium which is in Coney Island - BUT it may be a bit cold and lemme tell you Coney Island really isn't what it is all cracked up to be.

You can go through Harlem (NO YOU WILL NOT BE SHOT/STABBED/MUGGED in Harlem... most likely waaaay before you get there), and see what the big fuss is all about there.

If you are around during a Saturday you can actually walk through Fortgreene (the neighborhood I live in now) and check out the TONS of stoop sales (you never know what you will find).

Central Park is also a must do, but if you are going to go through Central Park - go through the 72nd Entrance on the West side, you'll go through the Strawberry Feilds, you'll see the Dakota (an old hotel turned apartments, and one of the move famouse and riches places to live in), also if you walk further down there is a huge foutain/lake area that is used to be filmed in a ton of movies, oh there's also a huge concert area, and on the weekends, there's a huge skating dance circle (I really can't explain it you just have to see it).

*GASP* Kioko!!!! You forgot CHINATOWN!!! DUDE!!!!! Don't make me hunt you down (by the way I need to ask you something else where)... anyway... Chinatown is a must walk through, crowded as hell, but there's a ton of side streets and a ton of things to see.

You can also go through City Hall which isn't that far away from Wall Street. Century 21 is there and that's a great department store. Also Ground Zero is there, so you can take a look at it (although there is NOTHING to see there, I think Kioko will agree with me on that one). Also not to far is Wall Street, and you can walk to the Southstreet Seaport.

Kioko was right about checking out the Empire State Building, I don't think that the Statue of Liberity is avalible to see in November.

One last park before I close this session of suggestions up - and that's Union Square Park. There's a ton of things around, a play or two that is still going strong around there ( I think Stomp or something like it is stillplaying in that area). You will also be very close to Webster Hall (which is the huge club where anything can go wild) and the Tunnel (I think it's the tunnel).

OHHHHH!!!! Webing that we are talking about clubs (i'll get into a bit more later or a later post) - AVALON!!!! it's on 20th and 6th Ave - not that far from a Bed Bath and Beyond, T.J. Maxx, Feline's Basement, Circut City, Staples, and a Starbucks or two, oh yeah and a McDonalds. But your wondering what the hell Avalon is... it used to be called the Limelight, and a club in a church. I have a lot more to give to you - BUT... I woke up an hour ago, and this is the first time I'm really taking a look at the forums from Friday... soooo

No Boinky! *boinks the boinky* What happened was that MoMA was going through maintenance and reconstruction in Manhattan, so they moved it to Queens (another Boro in New York), until the Manhattan space was ready again. Well it seems they have finished and are going to move it in October - November.

Darn, I envisioned it migrating like a european swallow gripping a coconut by it's husks!

oops.. I did forget Chinatown. But then again, I'm not a big fan of Chinatown because every sidewalk is lined with knock-off items like watches, purses, and sunglasses. But then again.. that's why a lot of people go there! lol.. tourists love picking up fake $20 Prada purses, Gucci sunglasses, and Rolex watches.

Yea, I really don't like going to Ground Zero. It really irritates me to see all the scumbags selling WTC, FDNY, and NYPD merchandise to the tourists who are tasteless enough to buy them.

Yeah, I forgot MoMA when I posted on the VE board... glad to see Nexeus remembered it though.
