I got tickets, opening day, 7:30 pm, Statium seating, and large screen. ^_^

So...expectations? Hopes? Worries?

Seems like Peter Jackson was making it a bit too much of his own making, and not Tolkiens. I hope he did less "wrecking" of the original books in this, granted some is needed, at a few points it seemed almost like he was raping it totally (That was just due to seeing a commercial and making an assumption).

Besides that, it looks wonderful. Siege of Minas Tirith will be great, with Mumakill (Elephants), Easterlings and everyones favorite Elf-Dwarf two man army. ^_^

About 201 minutes, I think. Sounded like 3 hours and 30 minutes?

actually, news just said it's 3 hours 40 minutes. Looks pretty good

Wonder how long i'll last through it without going to the restroom? (in Two Towers i made it 2/3 the way through).

Things not to do, while watching LotR:

1. Stand up halfway through the movie and yell loudly, "Wait... where the hell is Harry Potter?"

2. Block the entrance to the theater while screaming: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" - After the movie, say "Lucas could have done it better."

3. At some point during the movie, stand up and shout: "I must go! Middle Earth needs me!" and run and try to jump into the screen. After bouncing off, return quietly to your seat.

4. Play a drinking game where you have to take a sip every time someone says: "The Ring."

5. Point and laugh whenever someone dies.

6. Ask the nearest ring-nut if he thinks Gandalf went to Hogwarts

7. Finish off every one of Elrond's lines with "Mr. Anderson."

8. When Aragorn is crowned king, stand up and at the top of your lungs sing, "And I did it.... MY way...!"

9. At the end, complain that Gollum was offensive to Ethiopians

10. Talk like Gollum all through the movie. At the end, bite off someone's finger and fall down the stairs.

11. When Shelob appears, pinch the guy in front of you on the back of the neck.

12. Dress up as old ladies and reenact "The Battle of Helms Deep" Monty Python style.

13. When Denethor lights the fire, shout "Barbecue!"

14. Ask people around you who they think is the next "Terminator" sent from the Middle Earth of the future to assassinate Frodo Baggins

15. In TTT when the Ents decide to march to war, stand up and shout "RUN FOREST, RUN!"

16. Every time someone kills an Orc, yell: "That's what I'm Tolkien about!" See how long it takes before you get kicked out of the theatre.

17. During a wide shot of a battle, inquire, "Where's Waldo?"

18. Talk loudly about how you heard that there is a single frame of a nude Elf hidden somewhere in the movie.

19. Start an Orc sing-a-long.

20. Come to the premiere dressed as Frank-N-Furter and wander around looking terribly confused.

I said this on the way back and i'll say it again, nothing will ever top Gimli's line in Two Towers.

(note: may not be exact, but it's close)
Gimli: Toss me!

That still makes me laugh.

Can't wait to see it on Saturday.

Ready bootay? I think we's a got our selves a good ol' ass whoopin t'do!

*/me opens a can of whoop ass, then reads label...*

Best before january 5th 2004... Right, it's still got some kicks in it!

And as to what mummu wrote. We DID do the Anderson bit, tho that was before I saw your post... I'd have done the sing-along as well if I'd thought about it!

A hint tho... When Gandalf drives of the Nazghul with his flash light (a cone of light pops out of his staff) don't mention anything about Duracel, and how it's just better... hehe, peeps don't appreciate that apparently... :P

Oh, and when Elrond is talkin to Aowyn, DON'T say "I am your father" right after he says " I have to tell you something"... they don't like that either...

That said, the movie is, so far, the one truest to the books! And the best bit... The best bit in the whole damn world... Gimli is not even REMOTELY as idiotic as in TTT... He's still relief (Jackson will be beaten to death with a LOTR book for this... Mark my words) but he's not as bad this time... Not by a long shot!

The biggest real problem with this movie... Is the "I brought my girlfriend even tho she didn't wanna go, don't you have som'n for her as well" ending... That... I could have lived without...

But it's worth a watch!

Well I don't know. I haven't seen the last movie. I'm just too disgusted with the fact that they injected stuff that was not in the books to give Arwen more screentime through all the movies and threw out a lot of the original, more important things. I could understand having to cut out a lot of stuff because the trilogy IS a REALLY long story... and we can do without a lot of the books' pages and pages of Frodo's whining and scenes of hobbitish home life.

But FFS, why couldn't they just follow the freaking story, omitting the parts that might be dull to a lot of folks, omitting less integral characters like Rhadagast the Brown, break it into four or five movies and preserve the integrity of Tolkien's work? I find a lot of what Jackson did to the story offensive. He's seriously dumbed it down and removed major themes that Tolkien was trying to get across. It's a damned shame too, since the sets, the costuming and the special effects were spectacular. Nothing short of amazing.

As for the ending of Return of the King...well in the book, it was pretty damned girly for the most part. Big, sentimental wedding between Aragorn and Arwen, hobbits going home setting things straight and getting frisky with hobbit girlies and all that. But judging by the Two Towers extended director's cut, it will lack the most important and mundane action that serves as culmination of the story. That being Sam planting the seed of the white tree descended from the two trees that lit the world in the Shire. For the symbolicly challenged, this single action represents the birth of a new age and the concept that hope springs eternal and that we can rebuild, even after 'the end of the world'.

I can see how someone who has never read Tolkien or who didn't have the mental stamina to really embrace his work might enjoy Jackson's interperetation of it. But for me, these movies are like Lord of the Rings for Idiots. I'll end up having to see the Return of the King because my BF really wants to see it. But if it's anything like the first two, I'm going to walk away from it disgruntled and downright disgusted.

My opinion of Jackson can be summed up with a quote from Heavy Metal. "Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him. He should be ripped into tiny pieces and buried alive."
"Ke barjurir gar'ade, jagyc'ade kot'la a dalyc'ade kotla'shya."

None the less Bootay's right!
If you're makin a movie on a book... Do it right!
I'm gettin a lil' pissy bout hearin how great Frodo is (mainly cus I never liked the whiney lil' punk) and how great all saving aragorn is...
Aragorn is a leader... not a one man army... So what the hell heppened there?
I wont begin on the whole Gimli bit, as you know where I stand... Nuff to say I'm pleased he's not such a big idiot in ROTK... Tho he's still comic relief... Image

This said, number three is cool, and by fay the truest to the books!
Tho they did cut out a rather important thing... but fret not, it will be in the DvD version... They just figured 5 hours was too long for the movies...

Im with Oddysee. You hear me, Paul Verhoeven? You HEAR ME!?

Movies based after books usually get changed far too much for it to be at all enjoyable, if you've read the book. Eg.: Starship Troopers. I could rattle on dozens of differences, but Ill spare you.

Well, a book can be nearly an endless thing, whereas a movie must fit into the time (Why I have heard the saruman-shire thing was taken out, too long, among other things).

But its been on my mind, didnt a lot, and a lot of good stuff, get taken out?

I thought aragorn would slay the Mouth of Sauron, and I thought the Witch King would break Gandalfs staff, among other things. :)

And where the HELL were the Easterlings that were spoken of attacking gondor, and at the black gate? -_-

I actually have to respectfully disagree with StBootay here, for the same reason that she already admitted to.

Three rules in translating a book to a movie:

A) The movie can only be based on the book, not vice versa.

B) If an idea can be originated within the time that contradicts the book but allows for the entertainment of those who wouldn't have read it, then use it.

C) People are stupid. Make the movie equally dumbed down. Tell the story so that people will get it within the time frame allowed, even if you have to change the story to do so.

Having seen the extended cut of the first two, I have to say I absolutely love the movies. Great plot, great action, great story, great acting. All neccessities have been filled. I'll take all four of those points and use them as swords against those who say the movie sucks simply because it wasn't following the book to the letter.

Forget the book. Comparing a book to a movie has always been and will always be a futile maneuver. The book needs to be rewritten to be applicable to cinema, and the best you can hope for is someone who is capable of such a rewrite. In my opinion, Jackson (with the help of Fran and company) pulled it off extremely well.

Again, forget the book. The only thing it has to do with the movie is that one inspired the other. ANY movie made from a book is a tribute to the book and the author of said book, NOT a promise to continue the exact legacy of said storyline.

I love the books. I love the movie. Both for the same reasons, but not comparible reasons. Falling into the comparison trap is the first downfall of any critic, in my opinion.

Repeated for the third time, because it is neccessary to enjoy ANY book-based movie, and it must be followed literally: Forget the book. The book does not apply here. This is a movie. Enjoy it for what it is, not what you'd have done with it.

I'll be honet, I have not read the books, but the movies were good... I'll get back to you when I read the books on comparisions.. but the movies were still good...

I went to the midnight showing here, and I got home about 4-430am and then got up for work the next day at 630 am >.< *shall not repeat that one again* Caught up on my sleep that night though, went to bed when I got out of work at 6ish, and slept til I had to work this morning at 530 ;)

Was worth the loss in sleep :)
