I am a NT as well as Nancuba and when I started playing it was a totally new experience for me. AO is the first MMOG I have played (of 2 reasons, I am a tech guy and thus none of the games on the market were compelling to me, and second I didn't have a VISA card before hehe).
So I read up on AO for about 1 month prior to beginning playing and the game seemed to be all I ever wanted.
Since I am a tech guy who watches tons of sci-fi movies/series and have a great belief in new technology the profession was given, nano technician, for one or more reasons. For those who remembered DeusEx, nanotechnology was one important element. Since I loved the game and AO seemed to contain many elements, including nanotechnology the name itself of the profession was enough for me.
The other reason was that on the paper a nano tech would be independent of weapons and have a variety of badass nanos that would cause direct damage.
I love my profession even though we are not the best damage dealer in the game (which we are supposed to be if you look at the description), but I have some hope left in FC to fix this, so that we once and for all can go out and nuke the hell out of everything

I have to admit that I had some vision in my head (mainly due to what was said in the description and so on) of the NT beeing a researcher type of guy that created / developed new cool nano formulas that only him could use.
Then we have the challenge of beeing a NT. It's a very tough profession to start up with for a first character and I have had a rough time when I got here. Luckily I had a few friends who were already playing that helped me out with tips&tricks, but still it was a hard profession to play as. Only after lvl100 I have found great enjoyment because after lvl100 one can finally look after yourself and not be to dependant on others. This was the breakpoint where the NT went from beeing a hardass, difficult character to play, to a character which actually could meet up with other professions with damage and such.
One thing I hated though was that as a NT I was unwanted in any team in my lower levels and this is still today the fact. People have this flawed impression that NT's suck and rather exclude them from teams. I say we may be weak healthwise, but give us a proper tank, some healing and distance to the target and we will nuke the crap out of any mob. We are not made to tank (which seems like the only thing people think of when choosing players in lower levels) but we are made to do damage! Together with roots and nukes we are a deadly combination
Today, about 6 months later I am lvl184 and a proud nano technician, and can never think of ever switching profession! I have become a true technician and can finally (with some buffs) create nanos (up to ql215), virral eggs, and some other stuff. I am still working on upping all my tradeskills but it takes time since those are blue skills hehe.

Some quotes from the official website:
"Direct nano technology is their game, and they are easily recognisable from the ever-present cloud of nano-bots surrounding their person. Scientific geniuses that make the more advanced nano technology seem so easy, other people conceive it as magic.""The Nano-Technician is a highly specialised profession focused on one thing; dealing the most amount of damage to the target in the shortest amount of time. He is all about nano programs, always holding a large variety of damaging nanos in his arsenal. The Nano-Technician also has access to extra programs that enhance the effectiveness of his attacks to a fine and deadly art.""The power to turn something into a smoldering pile of ashes is a great power indeed. It's even better when that power is at the tips of your fingertips. Add to that a ranged weapon of choice, and you'll soon familiarise people with the functions of the reclaim terminal. Either that or sending people running like crazy to escape your wrath. All this and more is the destiny of the Nano-Technician. Our nano programs are able to cover the full range of damage types; from chemical to melee, cold to fire. We will always find a way to damage to our prey, no matter their armor or level of skill. Some people say mind over matter. Well I say mind creates matter. As well as hurling any conceivable type of damage towards an opponent, as a Nano-Technician you will be able blind, root an opponent on the spot, and even prevent them from attacking. By executing programs on youself, your ability in the uses of nano technology will be increased. Matter creates, matter destroys and it is at our disposal as a Nano-Technician."- Xtrophic out
