I use iTunes. You have to tell it what format you want it to rip the CD to otherwise I think it defaults to mp4 but other than that it seems to do a good job. (I have iTunes because I received an ipod as a gift and it's just been easier to use it to rip music if I'm going to use it for my mp3 player anyhow.) I can't remember what I used before I started using iTunes. I think one of my previous mp3 players came with software for ripping music/uploading to the player but that was well over a decade ago.

I use Audiograbber. No idea if it's still floating around as freeware or not.
I may be retired, but I'm GridStream for life.

I'm actually pretty sure Windows Media Player will rip a CD to MP3.

I use a program called Freerip...which ironically isn't free anymore (but I still have my copy from when it was).

Exact Audio Copy is probably the best there is, you can do bit accurate rips and verify if you ripped it correctly and it will fetch the right artist and title info. But it's not a beginner program. It is free though.

Other than that, Foobar2000 should let you rip from CD as well. same with Winamp and most other multi-purpose media players.
