Virus warning!

Postby Gridfan » Sat Sep 28, 2002 6:54 pm

There seems to be a virus going around.
Some may have heard of it it's the "klez" virus. oe of the biggest most annoying ones for these past few months.

It is possible someone in GSP or who is affilated with GSP is infected.
The virus is clever and creates fake emails. reusing old subjects from
mails in your mailbox then send it out to people on your address book.

We discovered this as Boco mentioned he got a mail from aparently Wyldthing with the subject being a date. Sept 12 the subject started on.
So those of you have have receieved a mail named that please check your systems. One of you is most likely infected and resending out a mail named that to spread the virus further.

And yeah. wyld thing isnt infected she checked.
And so did the rest of us. So we are on a "find the unlucky person" hunt :)

So if anyone knows they have recieved a mail with that subject some time ago, please check your system before the virus has a chance to do any real harm...

Griddy, I am QUITE familiar with Klez.. Ye ghods, the fekker's been around for over 2 years now without slowing down.. It's one of the most virulent viruses in history..

One of the nastier things about it.... ANYONE who has visited the site and hit the "Staff" page could be sending it out to all of us, as it harvests email addresses from cookies, your webcache, your registry... Along with addressbooks, etc...

Isn't this one of the ones that fake the sender name? So even if it looks like it comes from one person, it's really comming from someone else.

That is correct... It grabs a random address from it's list of harvested addresses and uses that as the return address.

Just about the only thing that can be said for neigh-certain is that if you receive a Klez-infected email from someone, they are most likely NOT infected.

Yes...be very careful...

Klez got into my machine because I was an idoit and opened a suspicious email from one of my old girlfriends...

Today I'm still waiting to see if the shop is done fixing my computer...a good chance to get upgraded to XP I suppose. I'm losing almost all my information in the reformat but I still have the important stuff saved thankfully.

Main thing is I have to redownload AO again and lost my email/cable settings...didn't back that up as WinME totally screwed me up a few months back and I've been having problems...

Anyways...a good sign of Klez is NO text in the email and when you try to even LOOK at it...it brings up a save or run box...and it's not one I've seen...

So be careful, keep that antivirus open and don't be a baka like me!!!

And yes...I'm laughing and crying about it right now...
