Those pics look really nice.
I just hope I don't have to upgrade to Windows 7 in order to play though. ~crosses fingers because I can't afford the upgrade~

The engine upgrade is designed for Direct X 9 (instead of the current ancient 7) so you won't need to.

Not to be the negative one, but really what is new with those pics? It looks about the same as they posted over a year ago. So far its been "its coming along fine", but never ever any clue on when it can be expected.
I for one is rapidly loosing interest in an engine that at this point looks only like a vague possibility of ever happening...

Personally I'm totally geeked at the prospect of my favorite game ever suddenly getting prettier. With all the time they've put into this so far (which I know firsthand they have been doing), I can't fathom the possibility of them just throwing in the towel after all this. I'm totally excited.
Soon! (TM)

Well, the thing with this is the fact that it's not that the engine pics are getting any more different but it's the zone they they're showing is different each time. It's giving me the impression that they're slowing going zone by zone.

Same zone as far as I can tell. In this video from 2008 you can see Tir at the end.

I have personally given up just about all hope of ever seeing it. I've been waiting since 2008 and still waiting...

yes, all the screenshots have been from Tir. There was video footage shown at the AO 10th Anniversary meet that featured Borealis.
The only other video footage from the new engine was the character walking through grass in Tir. (ooh, moving grass, which I don't even think is funcom code - see speedtree.com)
If it ever gets released and looks anything like AoC in quality, it should be nice, but yeah, that boat has long since sailed.

as long as there are other projects around, the secret world and age of conan, ao will not change my honest opinion.

Unfortunately, the video one that they made was made with the Ogre engine. They're currently using Dreamworld, which is what AoC uses. And AoC is very nice, especially the water. I hope it looks the same. I wonder if it's taking so long because they're doing a surprise and updating everything, not just the game world but also some of the mobs, etc.....

I know many of their resources were devoted to TSW development during the last couple years. Hopefully now that TSW is reaching completion, we'll get some of the graphics geniuses of Funcom back to AO. I suspect we will.

I'm in the camp of being more concerned about the balance changes than new engine myself. Substance > fluff *shrug*

I think what's new in these pics is the reflective water. Did any of the previous screenshots have water that pretty?
Personally, I don't care how long it takes for them to get it done right. I'm happy to see whatever progress they can show and keep playing, or at least partying, in the old engine in the meantime. Adapting a new engine to a codebase that's over 10 years old, that none of them were around at the start of, is no small feat. And the same relatively small team has to keep producing other new content like holiday phats and events, new daily missions, and bug fixes at the same time. They'll get there eventually and that will be a happy day.
