A man walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a glass of water.
The bartender picks up a shotgun and fires a shot past the man.
The man thanks the bartender and turns around and leaves.

Why did the man thank the bartender??

The man had hiccups.

The man was a regular and the bartender knew that the only way he'd be ordering water was at the orders of a telepath whose powers weren't strong enough to control him unless he was completely sober and within two meters, but strong enough to remove himself from the bartender's visual field at five meters, making his position roughly two meters behind and thirty degrees left, and within the range and spread of a shotgun at five meters.

He thanked the bartender for ridding the world of yet another telepath foolish and conceited enough to try controlling someone at the exact limit of his powers, leaving no attention for subtle details like tipping off the bartender or noticing the bartender's intention in reaching for a weapon rather than a faucet.
