i'm gonna try to get a hold of some sci-fi movies. you guys got any tips?
just got hold of the original Bladerunner.

Silent Running, 1972, the last environmentalist, 70's classic.

2001: A space odyssey, 1968, Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick. The most fantastic scifi movie ever.

Forbidden Planet, 1956, William Shakespeare's The Tempest in the 23rd century.

Things to come, 1936, screenplay by H.G. Wells.

Is that the original DVD release (no voiceover) or the original theatrical release (voiceover by Harrison Ford). If you haven't seen it before, I'd recommend watching the theatrical version first, as it clarifies certain important points. The short story it was adapted from, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" is also worth reading if you can find it. That explains a lot more, but it's not really necessary to enjoy the movie.

Other classic sci-fi movies I'd recommend:
1) Dune, both the David Lynch version and the two from Sci-Fi Channel.
2) Judging by your avatar, you've probably seen the Predator and Terminator series, but they deserve mention anyway.
3) The Alien series. All four. Alien3 is only included for completeness, though. That's getting into more Horror than Sci-Fi. Alien vs. Predator, too, if you're on a roll there, but those aren't exactly genre-defining classics there.
4) Event Horizon and Pandorum if you like it creepy. Sam Neill creepy, to be precise. I'd classify these both as Sci-Fi / Horror, as opposed to Alien's Horror / Sci-Fi, but it's pretty close there.
5) Minority Report if you don't mind short Scientologically-addled egomaniacs and just pay attention to the story.
6) Equilibrium if you can forgive the blatant Matrix plagiarism and again, pay attention to the story, not just the special effects.
7) The Matrix. The whole thing at least once, but the first is worth watching again.
8) If you're in an old-timey mood and don't mind black and white film or silver lycra costumes, try 1984, Colossus: the Forbin Project, Logan's Run, the original Planet of the Apes series, Flash Gordon (it's okay to laugh, a lot)
9) Speaking of laughs, how about The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension?
10) And Peter Weller reminds me of his films with David Cronenberg, which brings us back to creepy: Naked Lunch (this is NOT porn ... unless you're REALLY disturbed), eXistenZ, Videodrome, Scanners.
11) Xchange is a good sci-fi mystery
12) For time travel, try Next or Deja Vu, unless you want to do some time travelling yourself and dig up something like The Time Machine. Just ignore all the sciency bits. They're nonsense.
13) 2001: A Space Odyssey is certainly a classic, but unless you've read the book, you won't get much out of it beyond "gee, that Kubrick fellow is a real nutjob."
14) Strange Days is another sci-fi / mystery with a kinky twist to it, but I doubt anyone in this crowd minds that.
15) Dreamscape is vaguely similar to that, but a lot earlier

I could probably keep going, but that's too much already. Let's see what everyone else has to suggest before I ramble on any more.

I'm speachless as to the huge number of possibilities so I'm trying to think of a couple underappriciated films.

For now all I can think of are:

Lawnmower Man. Its pretty dated now, but was a very interesting concept. I liked the story and it got me thinking a lot when I was younger. Good blast from the past special effects movie aswell.

Moon. If you can find it its a pretty good movie about a person who is living on the mooon operating a mining colony alone for 3 years. The story gets interesting, but it could be called a good movie with a sci-fi setting.

On the lighter side of Sci-fi.

Spaceballs, 1987, Mel Brooks, a truly funny parody.

Sleeper, 1973, Woody Allen, voted in several different polls as one of the top 100 funniest movies of all time.
