If people stopped judging music based on genre and take on it on a song/band basis, they'd find they like a much wider range of music than they previously enjoyed.

I agree.. I listen to such a wide variety of music that I actually tried to SORT my collection by genre, and couldn't... because most of it I wasn't really sure what genre they fell under, or I thought they fit under more than one... So I just gave up. XD I wish more people were as open-minded about music as some of us are..

i'll listern to just about anything unless its bang bang bang crap that doesnt have words to it. i even got to like some metal stuff while listerning to ashval all those years. but only the stuff thats got words to it! i am a sucker for needing to sing along to songs cant do that if there is no words :p

I don't like country for the most part (looks at mp3 collection and hides all the country) ok, i like fun country. But, you will not find me hoping in my car and purposeully tuning into country music. If Joanie or Ick play country, I will listen to it. Oh yeah love johnny cash but don't count him as country at all, even though he probably his. I consider him a singing story teller that occasionally sounds like country. :)

I don't care so much about genre any more. I'm lucky if I know what genre any song is most of the time. :) Since listening to GSP I've come to discover that a good song is a good song, regardless of anything else.

I'm to slack to figure out genres most of the time...so I just listed to stuff and if I like a song by a band I'll quite often go see if they have anything else I like. Either by getting whole albums or youtubing. I actually have to do a fair bit of thinking if someone asks me for "just something from X genre".

genre's are so blurry sometimes, becaseu some bands i considered to be industrial other consider to be EBM. There are also some bands that are kinda metally that i still consider to be Industrial because i just do (ex newer ministry is kinda metal where as the old stuff is industrial and there REALLY old stuff is kinda dark wave/goth)

But so many genre's have sub genres and so on and so forth.

Duke ellington had it right so long ago.
"If it sounds good then it is good."

Genere means something, but the boundaries are paper thin now. Country sounds more like Rock, Rock is getting more like Metal or R&B, and Rock from the 50's would be considered Country today.

Genere is used to make you feel safe in listening to something even if it sounds like crap. Have fun and try something of everything. Worst that can happen is you learn more about why you like what you do.
