Today, October 30, 2008. Is the 70th anniversary of the airing of, what is probably the most famous radio broadcast of all time. The Mercury Theater on the Air’s adaptation of H.G. Wells’s, War of the Worlds. It was also the biggest, most monumental and the most gosh darned brilliant Halloween prank in history.
The show scared the wits out of over a million listeners and was said to have caused panic in the streets through out New York and New Jersey. People actually believed that the Earth was being invaded by Martians.
Somewhere I have a recording of the broadcast. (on vinyl) It’s been many years since I’ve last listened to it. Hearing the news of the anniversary makes me want to dig it up and hear it again.

Appears no need to buy with the IntraWebZ available and so many dedicated fans ...

Many copies of it floating around. Archive of the show it was imbedded into with working downloads:

Nifty dedication site, but with questionable bandwidth. They must still be leasing their lines from Edison for the site:

Prom.

promethial, those are some great links that you have posted. I'm a huge fan of old time radio. I can't wait to get home and download some classic shows.

Thank you :)

I remember as a child listening to an original broadcast with my Grandmother. I also got to see an old black and white version of it on film - all before I was 12. I have fond memories of it. As a teenager a local radio station did a spoof of the broadcast with a modern twist. It was very interesting.
