Gridfan reviews Mass Effect for PC.

Postby Gridfan » Mon Jun 23, 2008 5:33 pm

Since I played through the game, (took 35+ hours) and felt like writing a few words, and I really needed at least one game review on my site to start things off with. I wrote one.

Note! This is not a short blurb, might make a good lunchtime read or similar though...
And it may or may not sway your choice to get Mass Effect PC.

And for the hardware geeks, I also updated the CPU and GPU charts to include the latest Nvidia and AMD/ATi cards.

Good review. Well thought and written and you make some good points about the game and DRM and all. You could drop the numeric values off. With writing like that it should be clear for reader whether you liked the game or not.

The story seemed very cool. While I haven't had a chance to atually play it myself I sat through most of the story line watching Xtrophic play it.

Considering you can play as male or female, and have a slightly difference in romance depending on that. As well as variations in sidequests and backstory depending on which companions you talk the most with it is quite varied.

I suggest you do play it Tasty, as the profile (make sure to make a new profile so you don't mess X's up) and save game will influence various things in the second game.

A cool feature I wish more games used.

This game is awesome.

And yeah I always loved the "romance" scenes/dialogs like in kotor.
Btw yep my actual signature is my personalized toon in that game. :) I really appreciated to be able to make my own toon face. Great!

Only bad thing -for me- I'm sure I'll need a new computer for the 2 next opus (trilogy). And I hope they don't forget to make a kotor 3 soon.

Well, time to save some money...

I just went out and bought it, I'm having a hell of a time trying to get it to even install. Multiple error messages (some from C++), etc. Bioware's fix of manual installing didn't work at all and there's nothing on the game forum that works. Right now I'm pretty unhappy with EA and by extension Bioware cause the patch to fix most of this stuff is being rolled into an update patch like Funcom used to do way back in the day.

This means that they could have released a small patch to fix most of the installer issues that me and others are having and released thier content at a later date in a second patch.. but they wanted to reduce the number of patches instead. So a month after release I'm left wondering what Bioware/EA have been doing all this time.

What makes matters worse for me is that I'm running the most vanilla of all OS combinations: WinXP Pro 32-bit on a 1 processor ASUS board. It's not like I'm running Win Vista Ultimate 64-bit on an 8 processor Itanium board or something equally crazy. Here's to hoping EA/Bioware get it together and get that patch out.

Really weird. No handy tip for you either considering you've checked the forums. I'm assuming it's Visual C Run Time something dll's it can't find?
