After reading this story http://stuff.co.nz/4398357a11.html I think they may have gone just a bit overboard...I'll have to bare it in mind next time I am flying though so I don't get myself in trouble cuase its the kind of stupid remark I would make.

Damn, it's like Nazi Airlines with frequeint flyer miles. I'd be one such individual to crack a joke like that too. We're wound so tight that some baisc humor is punishable.

Is anyone else feeling less free? Next time I fly, I'm going to keep a death lock on my shoes and tooth paste. Only... I'd better not call it a death lock... I might get locked up and banned from flight Nazi.

Lucky me! I get to fly tomorrow night I hate airport security, half the time they dont check anything, the other half they shake down old ladies and me. I guess we cant just talk and joke like we used to anymore when it comes to flying. Though last year, I was going through security in an airport in Florida, and part of my carry on was a bag containing a plastic pirate sword, an eye patch, and a hook hand, all for my son Needless to say, the security looked at me crazy, while other passengers were laughing at me. I t was fun.

I'm all for smart assery. Bu tI also have this thing called common sense. And it tells me not to crack jokes to security personnel about carrying a concealed weapon.

Chai next time take a blow up sheep. That should freak them out

Airport security has been taken to ridiculous lenghts, pretty much. Ban against more than a certain amount of fluid aboard an aircraft? Heh, trust me, it's not exactly hard to create an explosive that's potent enough to blow a rather large hole in the fuselage and thus cause explosive decompression (sucks to have that happen at 35000 feet) but has less volume than what they allow, AND have it look like ordinary fluids (hairgel etc).

One of the most ridiculous things is that Airport Security, and especially the US Border Patrol can (and often will) take your laptop computer away from you without saying anything about why, all stating that they're doing it "in the interest of national security". Well, I know what I'll do if I ever go back to the states and have a laptop with me: Encrypt the drive on it so hard that even NSA will have issues in cracking the code for the next 200 or so years.

Pulling a joke in airport security is beyond stupid, though. When you KNOW everyone there is waiting for an excuse to do a cavity-search, you don't go around deliberately pissing them off.

It's a fact that the airport security doesn't have a sense of humour - neither does seaport security for that matter. That guy really had it coming.

It doesn't make must sense though. They dont let you have toothpaste or nail clippers in hand luggage for they can be explosives or dangerous blade weapons, but then they sell absinthe on plane and give everyone a steak knife for meal.

I'm worried about being able to bring along knitting projects next time I fly. I just recently learned how to knit, and a couple of the sites I visit have pages devoted to dealing with airport security (like using plastic needles, leaving cables/circular needles at home and making sure to have a SASE so you can mail your project home in case they won't let you carry it on). Gah.

I know one simple way of avoiding much of the hassle with airport security: Not carrying handluggage. When I travel, I keep everything I need in my pockets (yay for cargopants with multiple large pockets). Usually not more than my wallet, a book, my cellphone, an MP3-player and a set of headphones plus my keys. And that's it. Everything else goes into the cargo-hold. This was even the case when I flew from Boston to Oslo via Reykjavik, which combined makes for around 8 hours in the air.

I think it would have been different if the guy said "Just Kidding, it's a trumpet, see?" and showed them the inside of the case. Even apologize for being a smart aleck or something...probably wouldn't have been banned for 5 years, maybe 6 months or something. And what is up with teachers doing this?? He "may have" been a teacher and the year before another teacher joked about having a knife and a gun. Too much hanging out with the kids or what? Hello, you're supposed to be the Grown-up!!

I can be a smarty with the rest of them but I know when to hold my tongue. Some ppl never learn though.....

Everyone is wound just a little to tightly. He cracked a joke and now everyone is up in arms about it. Was it in good taste? Not in the least. Is it being blown way out of proportion? For sure. The only thing the guy is really guilty of is some faulty sensability. Jeez.
