*sigh* Artist and song ideas

So I was moving some files around today, mostly to make room on my primary partition so that I could install a few more things. Moved some movies mostly to my second partition.

Finished the move, then turned off the computer since it wasn't in use and went upstairs. Came back downstairs, turned my PC back on and decided I would load up a few favorites so I completely cleared my playlist (which had all the songs I had listed). Tried to load up the drive my songs were stored on but it wouldn't go into it. Thought that was odd so I opened up Windows Explorer to take a look and it told me the drive wasn't formatted and asked if I wanted to format it now. Of course, I said no because all my files were there...or so I thought.

My secondary partition had crashed and any files on it were lost. That included any and all songs I had and quite a few movies. Needless to say, I was a little pissed. And since I had cleared my playlist completely to try and only load up a few songs, I had no clear idea on what songs I should have. So, I'm looking for some ideas so I can build this back up again. I only had close to 2k songs but it's going to take a while to download again.

I don't have any primary music tastes (except rap and country, I don't like that). I like rock, metal, heavy metal, house, trance...well you get the idea. Some artists/songs that people would suggest would be great.

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear that. :/ Man, this could wind up being a very long thread. Not really sure even where to begin here.

Urm....

Easy suggestion, check the DJs "requested music" threads :P and Veldron's top bands lists are good :)

Take some time to have good old GSP blaring when you are doing other stuff.. any time you hear something you like.. have a note pad next to PC.. write down the artist etc :P
Even when the DJ's aren't actually live - there are some great tunes (that sometimes dont make it to the live sets) to give you inspiration!

When I went to work today, some people here recommended I try some file recovery software. I couldn't access the partition so I just did a quick format, not a full so i didn't write the drive to 0's. I also have not accessed it since then so nothing has been over written yet. I might be able to save SOME things, which will save me some time. Even if it doesn't work, not like I have anything to lose...it's kinda gone already

Yay, found a program called Pandora Recovery. The initial scan can take a while and it takes a few minutes just to recovery a few files but it does work and I've gotten a few songs back. Problem is that the deep surface scan only supports a few file types so I won't be able to recovery everything unless I want to dish out some cash...which is what I was trying to avoid. It's difficult to try and balance the two. Also used a program called ParetoLogic Data Recovery. I got them both from download.com

I've learned something today. It takes a lot longer to try and recover files that it is to juste download them all over again. So...I'm just going to start from scratch. Got 5 large sticky notes full of artists I need to download

might want to check out this site, I use it a lot. http://www.last.fm/ It has tons of artists on there, you can listen to the music and see if you like it. You can look by artists names, genre, etc. I have found a lot of kick arse bands on there that I haven't heard of before. Good luck and sorry to hear your HD went on the fritz.
