This is what a sap I am

There is this one Christmas song that gets me everytime I hear it. I mean it seriously chokes me up and sometimes even gets me crying. I heard this song today on my way to lunch. I was meeting some other people and I had one woman in my car and the song comes on. So I turn it down and I tell her if I hear it, I'll cry. She asks me what it's about and I start getting choked up just talking about it.

So the song is called Christmas Shoes and it is by Bob Carlisle. The story is that the mother is dying and the little boy wants to buy these shoes for his mom ("I want her to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight") but although he empties out his pockets he doesn't have quite enough money. So the guy behind him in the line feels for the kid and helps him pay for the shoes.

It's cheesy and sappy and it gets me every time.

Up until this year I would have thought this was the only song that had this affect. Then the other night I'm driving home from work and I hear Snoopy and The Red Baron and I'm singing along "Christmas bells those Christmas bells..." and there's nothing to get choked up about in this song, right? Only then it gets to the part where The Red Baron lets him go and "The Baron cried out 'Merry Christmas my friend!'" and I find my throat starting to close up.

I'm such a sap, I swear. There is something about this time of the year that just does me in.

So fess up. I can't be the only sap here, can I?

Bob Carlisle routinely does it to me.

I've long said "Butterfly Kisses" would be the song for my Father/Daughter dance at my wedding. But that's not Christmas Related.

Yes, Christmas Shoes does me in.

christmas songs... not me. hear them too much as it is, they don't bother me one way or another... but "The Little Girl" by John Michael Montgomery does everytime. One song that did choke me up but does not normally do it, was the song "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwald (I think, can't remember artists name too well) when I graduated from basic training in the U.S. Navy. but that one got nearly my entire division. 80 guys, out of 88 teared up. lol

Yes Val Christmas shoes gets me too, but as a lover of country music there are quite a few songs that reach deep into my heart and soul the one that makes me pull off to the side of the road tho is the song If you Get there before I do, because he did and I am still here.. so yes that one really does me in.

You know, there isn't a single Christmas song that can hit me below the belt that way. There are a number of NON-Christmas songs that do though. I can't get through Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" dry eyed. Deine Lakaien's "Generators" nails me between the eyes by the first refrain. Some music is just potent stuff that sooner or later touches us all.

Despite Kenny's best efforts.... no time soon. Star Wars has its hooks in me deep. I am, however, back in Virginia as of last week. >.< Long story deserving its own thread.
