"There have been lots of whimsical coinages of words over the years, most of which disappear rather quickly," said Metcalf, an English professor at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill.

"W00t" didn't make him exclaim in enthusiasm.

"It's amusing, but it's limited to a small community and unlikely to spread and unlikely to last," he said.

What's not amusing is that you actually teach people.

*smack smack smack*

If the size of the community that uses a word is a determining factor on if it should be accepted and added to the dictionary, perhaps they should remove some words that are no longer used except by a few geeky (not derogitory) academics. I would guess.. and this would be an interesting study, that more people use the word "woot" in the english language then their word of the day "harry".

I mean, are their words any more deserving of being in there just because they were coined earlier?

Anyway, we struggle on.

I heard about this earlier today, on the radio at my bosses place... on a station that has it's demographic as over 40s.. and it even gave the definition of w00t... apparently the correct spelling is double zero, not double o

I refuse to put the double-zero. I just can't bring myself to do it. *laughs*
