Vallikat's question of the day...

Why, if you are a wealthy celebrity and you're going out drinking, why on earth would you not hire a limo? It seems to me that some star or other is getting popped for DUI about every other day. This is beyond my comprehension. Are they seriously that stupid?

Kiefer Sutherland Arrested on DUI in LA
By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Tuesday on misdemeanor drunken driving charges after failing a field sobriety test, police officials said.

The actor was pulled over at about 1:10 a.m. in West Los Angeles after officers spotted him making an illegal U-turn, said Officer Kevin Maiberger.

Sutherland, 40, tested over the state's legal blood alcohol limit of .08 percent, and was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, Officer Karen Smith said.

He was released around 4 a.m. after posting $25,000 bail, according to Sheriff's Department records.

Maiberger said Sutherland was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 16.

Sutherland won a best actor Emmy Award last year for his role as agent Jack Bauer on the Fox TV series "24." The series is set to return to the air in January.

Side note: Ironically this happened on the same day as there is a birthday listed for someone named Flatliner. hmm.

A lot of it comes down to (I believe) independence. It's the same reason people get pulled over for DUI every day every where else. We just don't report them because DUIs for normal folks just don't matter.

If someone like an actor is going out, they are (probably) doing so to escape daily pressures. Everyday life for them isn't as peachy keen as people believe. Being up at 3am to be on movie sets or in recording studios, public events, etc. They have managers, personal assistants and accountants hounding them. Limos are just another of those things that (if I were a "star") would hold me back. I can't imagine being waited on hand and foot all the time. I have to have independence. I really do. And I would imagine actors and actresses do too.

Keifer's DUI probably made the headlines for 2 reasons: 1) He's a well known actor, 2) An Actor hasn't been arrested in the last couple days. Entertainment news is getting dull. So far as I can see, he didn't do anything Joe Schmoe hasn't done. *shrug* Hell, he may not even have planned on getting drunk. It doesn't take a whole lot to get over .08.

To sum it up... eh...he could have just easily taken a cab. If I had to guess though, he probably wasn't drunk like we get at D*Con drunk. He probably just had 1 or 2 more beers past the .08 limit. But this is my assumption and personal opinion. No chewing me alive. :)

Well you raise a good point there about the independence thing. It just floors me every time I see one of these stories. I guess I figure although I can see that some parts of being a star probably aren't all they are cracked up to be, personally I would be taking full advantage of the "designated driver at my beck and call" part. :)

I haven't had a hit movie for quite some time. No one has given me enough attention lately. I think I better get into a car accident! No such thing as bad press.

*Pounces and then tips Zephem*!!! :)

and now, to disagree... *grin*

While that might be true for some of these idiots, KS is in a popular TV show which is about to enter it's 7th season. So I can't really see that being the case this instance.

Some people like to drive. Especially if they have £100,000s worth of engine.

Where was he drinking? I'd see it a bit pompous to turn up at m'local pub for a pint in a Limo.

We once dropped in to grab some food at a local chinese takeaway in what was at the time the longest limosine in Europe *brushes imaginary lint off lapel*

(My Uncle's best friend ran a car hire and limo company in London, plus my Uncle did their accounts, so he'd often get cars for free when he needed them... he and his friend conspired to give my cousin and me a shock when he picked us up from a party by sending the monester of the fleet as it was free that night... and then on the way home he got a bit peckish...)

Ok, ok....Point.. however, maybe I should have just said "car." I mean seriously, I would drive Kiefer around in my Plymouth if it would stop him from being arrested. :P

I can see both the point about Independence and about dropping by for a few drinks in something less obvious than a limo.

However, I have a severe problem with anyone who gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle after drinking. And that applies to the rich and famous or the poor and unknown.

I personally think that someone in public eye 'should' be even more carefull of image, not less.
