Of course, there is also the suggestion that super-colliders may lead to the creation of microscopic black holes that expand to eat all life, the universe and everything. So it could be like Russian Roulette on a really REALLY large scale.

Or really really tiny scale. My brain is unsure.

(Okay, I know in reality this is highly unlikely.... but I just like to imagine particle accelorators as universe-death roulette wheels... round and round and round she goes, where she stops, nobody knows...)

I rememeber hearing about this theory when I was in middle school (a rather long time ago... sadly to say), that a super-collider could result in generating a black hole, and expand exponentually, then eventually destroy us all. I think it was Steven Hawkins that came up with the theory. It's hard to say as I was really young, and that's as much as I can remember for sure.

So this is either a great scientific boon for all humanity,
Or the end of all humanity on Earth.

Trust in the ideal that this is a positive progression in the Higgs Boson model. This whole thing started by mainly Peter Higgs off of theories of Philip Anderson. The idea of it spawning microscopic black holes has been thought through, but the result is that there are already MILLIONS of microscopic black holes scuddling about the galaxy as it is, and the chances of one of those effecting our small planet is less than a planet sized asteroid or comet destroying humanity. These tiny black holes still act as a big black holes, but take many millions of years to consume enough atoms to take an effect on anything. I do recall a very good Phillip K. Dick short where a micro-black hole causes considerable damage to a spacecraft, but that was science fiction.

The most important research question that this collider will answer is the final gavel on the existence of dark matter, which seems to occupy 75% or more of our known universe. Take into account the Higgs Boson model is one of Standard Particle Physics. This is almost the LAST puzzling question of physics that still remains. It's conclusion will result in bounds and leaps into the Quantum role. And it could also lead to some interesting ideas on how we produce energy (suck it fossil fuels and hydrogen cell noobs), as this could lead to a new type of fusion that doesn't result in any sort of remaining after effects (ie radiation).

In conclusion, this is one of the great engineering feats that finally took hold, and now actually has become truth. I, for one, welcome our super-collider overlords.

I can see the toast now, "Well boys, we are either going to solve this biggest riddle of our field, or destroy the entire planet."

i remember doing something about this in physics alevel oh only a month ago >_< and we were researchin this thing and dam its big if u look at all the others one in switzerand already (those guys are hooked on this kinda thing dont know why) and the one somewhere in america but i think what they are looking to find is the strange quark (no really thats what its called) and theres another one called charm i really wanna meet the guy who made these names up cos dam he must have the worst imagination. But all of the quarks are put forward as down to speculation in reading. And to be honest if we get anything outta this thing it will probably be in a very very very long time. And im nt sure about it creating a black hole but ill have to read tht stephen hawkins book never got around to reading it. (ye i know i need to use punctuation and grammar and paragraphs =D)



............ just realised what i was talkin about >_< they aint they already found the ones i was talkin about just realised they were tryin to find out if the quarks are made up of stuff i think if i read those things properley..... I hate physics should never have done it for a level it just repeats everythin each year and adds a bit

Oh ye wat really have these quark etc discoveries really done for us anyway all they seem to do is just bring up another problem which costs even more money =D. I read a book which investigated a physics to the 'brink' of what we know and there are things in it which just cannot be explained and must just be accepted and this makes u think.... well take it as you will
