Up until the last week or so before the movie I was as prepared as possible to watch Michael Bay shit all over some of my fondest childhood memories, but in one of the most colossal reversals ever, it turned out better than anyone could have imagined.

I turned to Katie about half way through and said "This is incredibly stupid", and Katie responded with "Ya, but you are incredibly stupid too, snark snark"
That pretty much summed up the movie for me. Incredibly stupid actors with an incredibly stupid script, and incredibly good FX. The first thing Kendrick said walking out of the theater was Megatron looked like a dumbass, and what happened to that giant transformer that combines (with Optimus being most of his head). I had no answer, so thats your problem Mr. Bay, continue with you slow motion shots of military guys, and leave my poor kid with the most basic of questions, but please please please quit making movies, especially 2:30 ones.

As a HUGE Transformers fan as a kid, I have to say: I was solidly impressed by this movie. The dialogue was well done - Transformers style. Bumblebee was well done considering that Volkswagon was a bunch of ****heads and didn't want their car used in the film. (Which I have no doubt is similar to the mistake M&Ms made with E.T.) The way the movie went about explaining the premise behind how and why the Autobots transform is well done.
The theatre I saw it in gave it a standing ovation. Optimus Prime couldn't have been portrayed better on film. I thought the movie was fantastic, and I can't wait to see it again.

I'm almost positive that it wasn't so much that VW didn't want to be in the movie, but was more that GM backed up a Brinks truck full of money to the studio's front doors in order to get as many GM vehicles into the movie as possible.

There's also a reason given that Bumblebee talks through the radio, which satisfied me as much as his model replacement to make him an old Camaro.
That being said, I wish he had remained the 74 Camaro the entire movie rather than upgrading to the 2008 concept model.
No spoilers involved, but you are correct in that Megatron doesn't have many lines. I loved that, though, because it conveyed that Megatron didn't have much to say. His motives are made quite clear, his interactions with Optimus Prime get to the heart of the matter and very succinctly convey that these two have been fighting for centuries and know they aren't going to talk each other out of their chosen paths. The dialogue is very similar to the comic more than the cartoon.

LOL...no, but I won't tell you what I did to Megatron. I practically flame-baited myself there, but ye stood strong and were kind to me. I was a huge Transformers fan as a kid too (I have the entire GI Joe Vs. Transformers mini series by Marvel, not that it didn't suck or anything). I'm really surprised by the overwhelming love here, because I just thought this movie was a disaster. I just thought the script and acting was typical Michael Bay drivel. I'll give props to the SFX and even the back story on why the whole thing was happening. But that whole "audio team" that was investigating the sounds they made....I mean, c'mon, that Australian chick's accent came and went like a pit bull in heat.
The movie just didn't feel complete to me. I try to see genre flicks with eyes that have never seen anything about it (albiet X-men movies), and this just came off as a WTF. As a fan I can appreciate some of the pluses, but overall, I just felt silly watching it. Like a "Oh God" moment for comic book and animation fans.....and Transformer, toy destroying, GI Joe lighting-there-head-on-fire action figure fans.

If you read the first issue of the comic (I believe... been a long time) Bumblebee has a damaged voice and can't talk. I believe it was sabotaged by the Decepticons if I remember right... as I said.. its been a long long time.
I'm sure in the comic though that he needed the humans to fix it for him

Posted: Tue Jul 10, 2007 3:48 pmThe only way this film is likely to avoid leaving me swearing - lots - is if it's _very_ close to the comics - I drive Lyk up the wall by refusing to acknowledge the original TV cartoons as canon, much less anything since (apart from the original movie, of course)... only the comics I read as a kid were _real_ transformers, everything else is bad, wrong and fail!
Or I might actually enjoy it if it's far enough completely removed from the comics and my childhood memories that I can just pretend it's completely deperate and just enjoy the big stompy robots. Doubtful though

I shall now stop complaining and wait and see how it turns out for myself, because you really can't pre-judge these things... except that you can, and it's going to be dreadful)

My only complain was that the Optimus Prime/Megatron showdown was anti-climactic (over way too short) and it's hard to distinguish between good guy/bad guy. Also, have either of them ever heard of dodging?!
I guess robots don't dodge, they just take it.

Posted: Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:52 amI have to say of all the things I liked most about the bots, the attention to detail was astounding, but the film's use of the robots' momentum was breathtaking. Particularly in the Bonecrusher vs. Prime fight on the highway, the motion of the bots from vehicle to bot is crazy well-done.
I also find it telling that everyone who has something bad to say about this movie (not just Otori, but all the critics) start out by calling it a "typical Michael Bay garbage". I just find it odd that the only critiques that I've read about the movie stem from ad hominim attacks on the director rather than the quality or content of the movie itself.
Of course, I didn't go to the movie expecting to see a masterpiece of dramatic cinema. I went expecting to see a movie about giant robots. (I actually went expecting to hate the rape of my childhood memories). I walked away pleasantly surprised. Did the movie have faults? Hell yeah. But was it a good ride? Hellz yeah.
