July 15th...Doomsday?

Postby davekillem » Wed Jun 27, 2007 9:21 pm

I would enjoy some kind of officially sounding reply about what is going to happen to GSP on 7/15. That is the day our new Sound Exchange folk are going to ask for all the internet broadcasters to bend over, far.

It is about 2 weeks away....

Are there plans? Is Funcom going to support this group in some greater fashion? Will you move the shoutcast server to Norway (lol).

Just curious, as I have not seen any real plans outside of "We'll be on the air somehow!" All niceties aside, I would very much wonder what will become of this great tradition and social marketplace if you will. Saying what we all want, which is to stay on the air, is one thing, but is there anything concrete you can share?

I know of the other stations I am active with, one is shutting down on 7/14 to not have to incur the retroactive payments.

Dragoncon...soon!

Fair enough, although we're under no obligations, ethical or otherwise, to sound off our exact plans on how to deal with it. As it is, I can say with fair certainty that most of GSP staff doesn't even know. This is something I've been working directly with, and I'm not exactly at liberty to discuss how, when, why, what, or who I pay in order to keep GridStream running and legal.

As it is, I can understand why many of the also-webcasters want to know exactly what we're going to do about it. But for me, it's not really a matter of business confidentiality as much as it is of PERSONAL confidentiality. Because no matter which way you slice it, at the end of the day, GridStream's financial state and security is my personal responsibility; my personal problem. And that's a part of my life I don't feel completely comfortable publically verbalizing the intimate details about.

Still, I will be addressing it in an upcoming News post, most likely tonight ( 6/28 ). And I will be offering a few more details about the directions we're going to be taking, but I'm not going to be posting expense reports or business contacts or anything, so please don't infer or ask for that kind of thing (not that you have directly done so to this point). There are forums all over the internet that hold wide-range discussions about the future of webcasting, and I don't feel comfortable making this site a hub for doomsday scenarios or conspiracy theories. We all know it's bad, and GridStream will survive it. :)

LOL.

My post asked if you had any concrete plans for actually staying on the air, as opposed to hoping it all goes away, which I have seen with some other stations. I wasn't asking for your personal financial data, contacts or who pays what bills, nor do I care one iota. What I did care about is this station staying on the air :). An answer of "Yes I am actively working on it" would have sufficed, not a diatribe about this being akin to a conspiracy tied into a plot to infiltrate some personal secret.

Just asked for something from a gsp person about what is going on in a GENERAL way. Your post was written more as an attack. Considering my support of gsp, and the 100 million credits I donated to you for contests when I left my active role in AO, you might want to....

Lighten up?

I don't really care about the actual discussion, just wondering how
davekillem wrote:"Yes I am actively working on it"

is more concrete than
davekillem wrote:"We'll be on the air somehow!"

which wasn't good enough...

They both say that GSP will continue in some form that's not specified. In fact "We'll be on the air somehow!" at least says GSP will continue as a station and not just an AO org.

*raises hand*

I'm not speaking for anyone here but myself, just trying to look at this fairly...

I think (and I stress the word "think") I get what Dave is saying here. Because personally, and Tarryk you know I love you, but I think you did get overly defensive in your response to what seems to be a fair question. So I think, Traanse, to answer your question, what Dave might be saying is that he would've preferred the "I'm actively working on it" response over the one he got.

So that said, I still think its a fair question because I asked Tarryk the exact same thing via a PM just recently. I love GSP and I know being told its not going to die is great to hear. But I don't want to see it die and the thought that it might makes me anxious. I know, we need to trust you. Ok, I trust GSP. I do. I mean, honestly, is that really in question? But I'm the type of person who likes to have the facts of the matter.

So maybe, just maybe, we might consider that Dave is enough of a fan to want to have some reassurance that the thing he's a fan of isn't going anywhere rather than berating him for asking the question.

I mean honestly, like I said, there are not much bigger GSP fans than I am, and I asked the very same thing as he did.

So it is wonderful news that GSP will stay on the air in some fashion or other. I couldn't be happier about that! :)

But to ask "ok, but how?" doesn't, to me, consist of a request for financial projections or opening the door to the inner-sanctum of GSP. Just saying.

I guess I can understand that. It's still the same information as before, but you never know if you'll get new info unless you ask. Also... I'm not the type of person that needs to know all the facts. Only until you ask me to actually do something and then you get peppered with questions.

I didn't think I was being even a little defensive, much less overly. I simply explained my position and gave the answers to questions that I could, and explained why some would not be given, since that seemed to be the foundation of the original post.

But since I'm now being pounced on for it, stating as much with any kind of conviction would be construed as defensive. Since there's no way out of that neat little corner, I'll just say "alrighty then" and move on. ;)

I'm sure there's a fair amount of stress weighing on everyone in GSP right now, surrounding this matter. :) With that in mind, I'm sure Tarryk didn't mean anything offensive, nor does anyone need to get roudy. :)

The moral of the story is; people are taking an active role in GSPs future, and we the people are happy to hear it.

Peace love,
hugs for all,
have a shot,
tis on me. ;)

Well I do not think their is another player out there that would be more devistated than I if we lost GSP, I however have always had faith in Tarryk that he would keep it up and going whatever it took, You see the way I look at it is this Gridstream to Tarryk is like a child would be to us we would go to any length to protect it, So yep I do not blame Tarryk for being a good father I commend him for it Live On GRIDSTREAM

I think SoundExchange would still want their dues... in case Tarryk were to claim the royalties one day. :?

Sad but true, if I understand correctly.

Not only that, but were he NOT to be able to pay the fees to sign up with SoundExchange to collect the "Royalties collected on his behalf" then they would go towards SoundExchange's "Administration costs".

Basically - they steal his money, twice.
