Problimatical.

Postby Fishi3 » Tue Jan 09, 2007 7:27 am

There are in effect two schools of thought when it comes to fighting in Hockey. One is to let the players fight it out and get it out of their system and sanction them for it later. The other is to clamp down on it and apply imediate disciplinary action. Whichever school of thought you belong to it's inappropriate for the announcer to act encouraging and enthusiastic about a fight. It sets a bad example for the kids who play the sport and imitate the players they worship. I suppose being Canadian hockey violence is more commonplace and has more of a social impact than it does Stateside.

My personal take is that the announcer should be benched and suspended from hockey for a season.

Hell no. Any announcer who doesn't get into a good hockey fight should be suspended. :P

I just find it funny when you are listening to a hockey game and then all of a sudden it sounds more like a boxing match. :P

Kidding no.

Postby Fishi3 » Tue Jan 09, 2007 8:05 pm

Nope I'm not kidding. In Canada Hockey is a big thing. It's in our schools and in our society. Kids play Hockey here the way kids play baseball and football in the US. So Violence in Hockey is something we are trying to tone down. It is the responcability of our society to teach our kids to be civilized members of society. Hockey stars are worshipped in Canada the same way Baseball and Football stars are in the US. Your never going to remove fighting completely but it should never ever be presented as a good thing or as fun and exciting. To do so is socially irresponcible.

So yes I think the annoucer needs a good cod walloping and a civic ethics class and ought to be suspended without pay for his words during the fight.

But then civilized behavior and responcability are in general decline on this planet so my opinion is definately the minority view.

I'm not sure I see what the announcer did wrong. It was a fight and he called it like he saw it. Essentially, he was doing his job. Even if you take the moral highground, there wasn't anything more that he could do.

As to toning down violence in sports, as far as hockey fights go, that one was about as good and clean as they get.

I dunno, taking it from the athletes point of view .. when I did play the fights were fun and exciting. I loved them, hitting, and getting it sets up such an adrenaline rush the high is unmatched, and its pretty well presented that when they players drop to the ice the fight is over and that is that.

You fight and its over with simple as that. Fights like that I am in support of. I think making broad sayings like "its going to influence the children" come down to the poor parenting of parents. Parents should have total control and be able to talk and raise their children to understand what is right or wrong.
