Shooting at Dawson College.

Dawson College is a quiet educational facility in Montreal. Founded by American Draft dodgers in the Vietnam era the College has maintained a quiet hippieish atmosphere for most of it's existance.
On Wed the 13th Kimveer Gil flipped out and filling his car trunk full of guns drove down to Dawson College which is situated in the heart of Downtown Montreal. He was seen collecting guns from his trunk and pointed what I believe was a assault rifle at the people who saw him. They fled and called police.
The Gunman who's motive remains unknown didn't fire at that time. He waited until he got into the College. A College he had no known connection with.
He walked into the Cafeteria and opened fire on the students there. Killing one girl and leaving 19 others wounded.
Police arrived and engaged Kimveer Gil in what has been discribed as a shootout. The shooter took a wound to his arm and promptly shot himself in the head.
All of this isn't really surprising in todays society where the pressure to be a success when your not econmically advantaged can lead to frustration and in this case rage at those who are precieved as having an advantage.
Dawson College is a Cegep which is a pre-university program with education in both trades and Academica. The students generally are from sixteen to eighteen years old the vast majority are not scions of the well to do but are in fact starting the long debt inducing loan and bursary road to higher education. They are working class kids trying to make good.
All of this upsets me greatly because I went to Dawson College. That and attacks on children are always upsetting.
The NRA says "Guns don't kill people. People kill people."
I say "People with guns kill more people per perpetrator than people with any other weapon so far."
Heres hoping that the death count stays at one and nobody else was crippled.
The dead girls name was Anatasia De Sousa. She was wearing pink a color that looked good on her.

My middle school, while I was attending had two shootings while I was in grades 6 and 8. One was a kid god crazy and got a gun somehow. The other was an adult of near 30's that tried to assassinate his old teacher.
I've been around some pretty hairy school shootings. And they're all very tragic.

I'm sorry such a shooting had to come to such a peaceful community. Even more sorry that Anatasia had to die as a result of it.
I do hope nothing more happens to the community there.

i understand that it sucks that there are crazy people shooting people, but i still have to say that its not guns that are the problem, its the people, and how the unfortunate ones slip through the cracks and end up with a weapon, be it a gun, knife, car, spoon, a gun is just a tool, just like any other number of objects. but again yes it sucks, but its the way it is

The NRA says "Guns don't kill people. People kill people."
I say "People with guns kill more people per perpetrator than people with any other weapon so far."
Actually, 5 years ago this week terrorists killed hundreds without using guns.
Guns are no more to blame for people getting killed than forks are to blame for making Rosie O'Donnell fat.
Guns can be used to defend, protect, hunt, or entertain. I was raised around them, I'm comfortable and respectful with them. I use all of my guns for hunting and target practice and I would fight anyone who sought to take them away from me because of what some other idiot did with his.
More people die in car accidents than die of gunshot wounds, yet people aren't up in arms about what a dangerous weapon a car is. Why?
Shooting.

I'll point out that the Terroists that hijacked the planes that they flew into the towers used guns to take over those planes. But while I'm not a fan of guns I'm not fanatically anti gun. Guns have their purpose. Self defense being one of the viable reasons.
My issue with guns is with illegal for private use yet easy to get if you know the right people assault weapons. A gun that fires off high velocity rounds that can go through 5 plaster walls and still kill someone isn't a defensive armament. Owning it is an act of war in and of itself.
This is the weapon the shooter had. I don't know the make but AK47's have become fairly easy to get so that would be my first guess. That he managed to shoot 20 people implies to me that it wasn't a legal M16 which is restricted to a 3 round burst. Mind you the firing pin on the legal version is said to be easy to modify and get full auto capacity. Back when I lived in the country we used to get hunters firing on the deer with Full automatic weapons. It's a sound you never forget. You never quite manage to feel secure once you see what one of those can do. Part of the reason I moved back into a city.

That's a terrible thing. It's always a shock when a place you love is associated with something like that. Shortly after I graduated high school there was a small string of suicides there. It was always difficult to stomach thoughts of that.

I'm staying away from the gun control debate but this is blatantly false. They hijacked the planes with standard box cutters/utility knives found in any hardware store, which they smuggled onto the planes.
Box cutters?

I find it hard to believe an entire plane load of people can be scared of a few box cutters but then I suppose stranger things have happened.

They would have never been allowed to carry guns in their carry-on luggage without proper identification showing that they were law enforcement of some kind.....and yes, that was true even pre-9/11. It's common knowledge that the hijackers used box cutters/small knifes to take control of the flights, as the recordings of United 93 mentioned it in the recorded cell phone calls. The passengers believed it was merely a hijacking that the hijackers were directing back toward the airport. All that aside, I don't like guns, I'm scared of them, but it's nutty ass people with guns that kill people, not just guns. So I owe condolances to the victims of that nutty ass person that happened to have a gun.
I am a native Oklahoman that knows a little about a nutty ass guy who used fertalizer to make a bomb and kill 168 people a while back, but I don't really hold anything against fertalizer personally.
Ok.

In any case I never meant this to be a gun control issue thread. I'm not in any way against gun ownership so long as the proper controls are in place.
I need to remember to keep asides out of my posts.
More info.

More infomation has come out.
The shooter had 3 firearms on him all of which were legally obtained. The rifle he used was in fact semi-automatic and not full auto.
Police responded instantly as there were two officers on site when it happened investigating an unrelated drug deal. The two officers heard the shooting and following the new proceedure for dealing with active killers that has been formulated after criticism of police after Colimbine, called for backup then confronted the shooter. Police are much more aggresive with armed perpetrators than they have been in the past and I think we can expect that fewer of these gunsils will survive to trial. Personally I'm not sure thats a bad thing. From Kimveer walking into the door and starting to shoot and his suicide when wounded by police a total of roughly three minutes passed.
Also Anatasia De Sousa was 18 and not 16. Still to my eyes a child but then I'm old.
