Meant to make this thread months ago, but forgot.

The Popcorn Parlor is a place to discuss movies or shows with your fellow GSP people :)

The Hobbit, I liked it and didn't at the same time.....

The actors were wonderful, the story very well done and exactly what I wanted to see, but.... good god did they really drag it out. It was like the last 15 minutes of Lord of the Rings over and over and over again in a 3 hour movie. It was good action scenes drug out very long to the point of boredom and very well done drama scenes wrapped on overly long panning of the backdrops. Its still well worth seeing imo. I just could have edited out about an hour of the movie and no one would have missed a thing.

To me, it wasn't so much the length of the movie, though that was an issue when certain scenes just dragged on and on or were completely unneeded, but the combat aspect of it felt way too campy (cartoony). Yes, it is meant to be a children's novel... a light intro into the world of middle-earth, to teach people of adventure and to not take people's efforts for granted. LotR trilogy certainly merited a three movie adventure, but the Hobbit? A single book that doesn't measure up to a single one of the LotR series? Yes, it was an ultimately fun movie and I'd see it again and suggest it to anyone who enjoys the adventure style movie like this, but I disagree with the cheesy combat direction and extending the story into 3 movies where 2 realistically lengthed movies (let's say 2:00 to 2:15 each movie with a total runtime of 4:30 rather than 9 hours that it will probably turn out to be).

I disagree with much of the bad press on this film, as it is still a very good experience as far as most movies that I bother to see in the theater goes. It is long and it feels long and the combat ruined immersion for me, but I felt myself smiling the entire time because it is a beloved story from my childhood and I know it well.

Has anyone else watched the series premiere of Continuum?

I'm really liking this so far.

This looks like a good place to post this :D

Not sure if you like the Old bad movies that use to be on " USA Up All Night" back when I was a kid but I always enjoyed them growing up. Anyway a friend of mine wrote, directed, produced and did all the editing + CGI special effects. for this little Zomedy movie, Offical Movie Trailer. There are some other clips and a good 45mins video of behind the scenes sort of thing on youtube as well.

He did this whole thing for the grand total of 5,000.00 USD, so for being a movie with no real actors just people from the small town in Montana, its done pretty good. And was picked up at the first Film Festival he sent it to, I'm not sure who picked it up and when it will be available, but Trevor said he would let me know and it would be availible for Download at somepoint. so if anyone seem interested I'll keep you posted. Ronnit (sp) did all the music a small band from Denver, CO.

Does anyone here watch Defiance? I am SOOoooo liking the story. A friend of mine had some negative things to say about it, but I think he just wants action instead of character development, and unfolding plots ^.^

I kinda lost interest after about 4 episodes, but I still have the rest recorded and plan to give it another try. It can get pretty cheesy in places, but when it does things right...it does things right. I've heard the last few episodes have been better, so I'll give it another shot when I get some time.

This is almost exactly how I feel about it (and I think exactly when I lost interest). I am counting on being able to grab the remaining episodes on demand when I'm ready to catch up.

I think it was specifically the episode where he met his old war buddy who ended up turning himself in to the law that I lost interest (think it was the 4th or 5th episode). I thought that was the worst episode of the series by far, and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Again though, there are times when the series is very well done...and some of the characters have the potential to be extremely interesting. The writing is just so terribly inconsistent. The low budget effects don't help either, but I can overlook that if I'm engaged in the story/characters.

I didn't make it to that episode then. I was very up and down about it like you. I had one week (probably the week you're talking about) where I couldn't watch it for some reason. After that it just became harder and harder to catch up on a show that I wasn't completely commited to. I only have limited TV time and there were just other things I wanted to see.

Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King
I need to remember to buy the movie. I enjoyed it.

Only saw it... twice I think but it's based off the Nibelungelied.

Ugh, yeah, the writers are trying too hard to make it interesting/engaging with the characters and that leaves things feeling terribly inconsistent. That said, I've been watching it because I really don't mind the campy sci-fi elements. I just... want to like it too much.

Just watched "Under the Dome" last night. It was as bad as I thought it would be.

I like the character development and how it unfolds. It feels kinda tabletoppy or booklike where you get a feel for the characters. 8)

I didn't think the pilot was that horrible. However, I didn't like the changes they made from the book and I thought the 2nd episode was weak. I can't see it having a strong future. There is some talk of a 2nd season and the story as it is laid out in the book doesn't allow for it to drag on that long. So that means more changes. I hated the book ending. However, I'm not sure I'm going to like "no ending" any better.

It felt way too campy for me. Too contrived in the 'setting up people against each other' theme. And there were many examples of them just pandering to the expected audience and trying to be edgy or shocking.

I mean, I guess I could enjoy it if I were to make a drinking game out of it and provide constant sarcastic commentary. I don't know, it just really brought out the 'MST3K' nerd in me.

And then I watched episode 3 and any hope that this series might somehow pull itself together went right out the window. That was a really bad 45 minutes of tv. Really, really bad.

Just to clarify, my other Monday night show is total guilty pleasure fluff called "Mistresses." Mistresses is not quality programming on any level. However I find it infinitely more entertaining than Under The Dome.
