i started at book four and it was fine for me the films helped but they dont tell u everything but you still get the gist

*shudders* relying on movie 3...you miss out on a lot of the story between hermoine and ron if nothing else.

ah no i didnt i read the book afterwards =D realised wat exactly happend =D didnt really like the latest movie was a bit boring but then the book didnt have tht much in it either though

The Order of the Phoenix had a lot more history information in it, which is how it was intended from what I understand. It's the book immediately following You-Know-Who's return. A lot of the characters were brought together--full circle, you might say--to be part of the OotP. But I'ma shut up now I don't want to leak out spoilers.
