Sushi?

Postby cerebrix » Sun Jan 08, 2006 3:32 am

No not that kind cut it out Kyrros......

Ok like everyone these days seems to be eatning more sushi out here in california (least in socal). So i was wonderin, should I give it a shot? I dunno, the whole thought kinda freaks me out.

Theres this place on the corner that has sushi, but something caught my eye. California rolls but instead of sushi, its baked salmon.

You all think I should take the plunge or what?

Definitely try it.

But beware that sushi is like... a mystical dynamic.. there's good sushi and there's really bad sushi. It's hard to prepare well.

I thought I'd NEVER try it as the thought really made me go 'AHHH'.. but I'm glad I did try it. (but no, it was what you'd call "bad sushi", perhaps I'll taste good sushi in the future :D)

Just remember, sushi isn't necessarily "raw fish", that's a misunderstanding.. fillings can be cooked or uncooked. The raw fish we always think about is actualy sashimi.

Anyway, you live once, try it!

Try anything once. I don't mind sushi, but I can't understand what people get so excited about, either.

I hate fish but i enjoy sushi...dunno why but i do. They cook eel, so if you don't want raw fish get that...it also just happens to be excellent. i say go for it, you'll be pleasently suprised.

This may sound strange coming from an admitted chronic conformist, but I boycott sushi due primarily to it's popularity amongst people who seem to like it more than they really do.

I think it goes beyond just being a fad, but it's something a lot of people use to try to identify with their inner uniqueness, and it drives me up the gorram wall. I know too many people who go nuts over sushi when I know DAMN well they don't really like it that much, they just want to be viewed as both hipster-cool and upper-middle class by other people. And, for some reason, sushi represents that to them.

So when my friends say "let's go for sushi", I say "ask your other primate friends, I'm gettin' a steak at Denny's." Because steak at Denny's makes me seem hipster-cool and upper-poverty class.

If you're semi-interested, go try it.. but don't get it from a supermarket. Sushi's best fresh and that means you should go to some place that makes the stuff. Try to get an opinon from friends on where to go or at least from food critics in the newspaper or something.

If you'd like to order something that really *tastes* good and might not *sound* so good, try Unagi. It's barbequed eel, which alleviates the whole "raw fish" thing (as Lauri said, raw fish is actually sashimi, not sushi). It's served as nigiri (meaning two pieces), not generally as a roll. While it may LOOK disgusting, if you can get past that, it's absolutely delicious. You can also order something called a "Dragon Roll" or a "Spider Roll" which actually involve relatively non-quesy ingredients like shrimp and crab tempura (fried), cucumber, avacado. The seaweed wrapping is one thing some people don't enjoy, but I really do like it (and it's healthy for you).

I definitely think it's something anyone should try. Hell, I'll try anything twice.

Sushi = teh pwn.

I want to go back to Japan, damnit. I miss the sushi, the okonomiyaki, the yakiniku and even the occasional takoyaki. Can't get any of that stuff in this pit, the only restaurants within a reasonable distance (2 hours of walking each way) are pizza shacks. Bleh. :P

Beat to it not once but twice - grrrr, though I guess the colloquial term now is pretty much Sushi.

I did try Sashimi once a long time ago and found it quite good

The little Ebi sushi is the only one I like. Yeah, I know it's boring. So what if it's only a butterflied shrimp over a rice roll...the rest of it is like chewing on tar colored snot rags or something.
