Guest Mix?

Postby djkp » Tue May 03, 2005 7:24 pm

This is kind of a lengthy post so I apologize for that but it has a lot of info. :)

I used to play AO from early-to-mid beta and from Day 1 to sometime in 2002, with a very brief stint in summer of 2003. I've come back for a little AO vacation here to see how everything is going and wanted to toss about an idea of a possible special guest mix or something for everyone.

If you could cast a response here if there is an available slot sometime, and sufficient community interest, I could do nearly anytime on a Saturday or Sunday (there is an exception on Saturdays). For a mix, 3 hours length is best, but 2 could be doable though a bit limited. When I play out, I go from 2-9 hours depending, but extended lengths wear you out quickly. I'm Pacific time of course, and generally not available on Saturdays from about 2pm-6:30pm (5pm-9:30pm Eastern.) Friday nights could possibly even be doable.

I mix live at clubs, parties and various events in California, and have been doing so for some number of years. I also mix(ed) regularly (usually on Saturdays) for various Net-radio stations, and have done guest mixes on a few others. I sometimes use a little studio cam and broadcast a video feed as well (with AAC audio) which can be fun to check out.

Hardware used for live sets:

2 x Technics SL1200MK2 Direct-Drive Turntables
4 x Shure M44G Cartridge & Stylus (2 for spares)
2 x Pioneer CDJ-700S CD "Turntables"
Rane TTM56 Scratch/Battle Turntablist Mixer
Sony MDRV700DJ DJ/Remix Headphones
Yamaha SU700 Phrase Sampler
Kurzweil K2000VP Keyboard/Synthesizer

Here is a pretty recent pic of the setup that I use at home and also pack up and take on the road.

Music styles & information:
I play from possibly a bit less than 1,000 records and a few hundred CDs, which I will briefly describe. Here is a sorted list of about half of the records that I have cataloged so far. The jazz music is mostly not cataloged.

(Some of the unreleased and non-promo'ed music won't be cataloged, so they will never be listed due to certain agreements that had to be made with the artists and remixers.)

I play mainly various Electronic and Dance music from the 90s and today. I crunch on a bit of the Tiesto/Paul Van Dyk/Sasha/Digweed/Oakenfold type stuff when I feel like it. :)

Most of my dance music is Trance or Progressive Trance with a bit of House and Progressive House, but also featuring some Breakbeat and Trancey Breaks in for good measure. I also have some some classic Techno/Acid, ala Sven Väth and Hardfloor.

I also play some Funky, Jazzy House; maybe you could call it "Funktastic Jazzeology," but I also own some 1950s and 60s+ classic Jazz (about a 45 LP box of it) which mostly contains stuff from John Coltrane and Miles Davis. These usually are good for sampling and mixing with the Housey sort of bits, and the DJ Battle records with locked grooves and sound samples.

Sometimes I use various Ambient and Chilled-out music (almost like New Wave/New Age or IDM) but mostly darker. I also sometimes use various movie soundtracks or samples, and acapellas.

The good thing is that when I have played in the past, most people that didn't orginally "like" my style of music, or thought that they wouldn't, were generally pleased with what they heard. (It can be hard to please clubgoers or large amounts of people at local parties and events when what they are generally used to hearing is Top40 radio or Rap/Hip-Hop!) :)

Let me know here if there is sufficient interest and I will make myself available for something unique and interesting. :)

Well! GSP is a radio station, with regular DJ's/radio hosts,
and irregular ones.
We are not really setup to handle "guests" directly,
esp. not musical guests.

So short of physicaly visiting a DJ or a DJ visiting you
and and doing the "guest" show that way.
I'm afraid we can't do a guest club dj.
You could always apply to be a GSP DJ tough,
the forms are on the website.

You could also check out http://www.societyofsound.net/
which is another radio group here in Anarchy Online,
they do a more community/public radio focus
and may be able to work something out with you.

Why give flowers to anyone? They wilt, they die the dry out.
