Appliance-gasm

I've been married for 3 years, and the first years of my marriage were marred by sporadic unemployment of one or both of us (due to immigration requirements, a move from Canada to Texas, and personal injury). When we moved from Canada, we sold everything that we owned that didn't fit into my car (basically, we kept our cats and computers). We've done pretty well based on the sheer generosity of my friends and family here in Texas, and my love affair with garage sales. However, it means we never did do the typical newlywed furniture, dishes, appliances purchasing. Our house is kind of a comfortable mish-mash of things we've built, things we've bought, and things we've been given. Nothing matches, but it all kinda works for us.

A month before our move, I received a line of credit from Home Depot for 2,500. This is an unbelievable line of credit for me, since my credit has been in the crapper for various reasons. Along with the line of credit comes 10% off, no payments and no interest for 6 months on any purchase over $299. We had just signed a lease for a place with washer/dryer hookups, which is VERY unusual for this town. Most apartment complexes here have communal laundry rooms or no laundry facilities at all. So we decided to shop around and see what kind of deal we could get on a washer/dryer, and if Home Depot was going to be our best bet.

The Maytag NEPTUNE looked amazing. This thing looks like it could cook you breakfast, time travel, perform an opera, and wash your clothes at the same time. Unfortunately, the washer/dryer set is in the $1800 range. But I WANTED it. Like I've wanted no household appliance since the Dyson Animal.

My husband is not the coolest head in the cabbage patch, so I had to be the voice of reason. Very against my initial 80's child "I WANT IT NOW!" nature, I talked him into getting a mid-range washer/dryer set with a steel drum and the features we needed rather than the washer that looks like it could deliver a baby, and costs as much as one. I'm so proud of our final choice, it didn't break our bank, and we now have some money available to buy a new sofa set next month!

However, my inner 80's child is NOT happy about waiting a week for delivery since the model we chose was a special order! RAWR!

I can't describe how excited I am to be the owner of a new washing machine and dryer. It's insane that I'm this happy about it, but dammit, it's like when I bought my first car. I've never bought a major applicance before, and certainly never owned a matching pair of anything but socks. So for at least a week I'll be quite happy to do laundry for a change!

Funny yes, but also a little scary when I realize that I've gotten old enough that new appliances excite me. It's okay, I was 10x this excited to get the new computer, so at least I'm not too old to appreciate the finer things in life. :)
