Constantine: Religious Maaaaatrrriiiix!!!

There is more pissed off fans at the fact that this movie breaks the mold of which its influence (Some D.C. comic called Hellblazer) contained than the hiring of the deemed bad actor Keanu Reeves. What sticks out is the role of Constantine, played in the movie by an American when in the comics, he was apparently British. While I do not understand why there is such outrage, I guess it would be like having the next James bond be Orlando Bloom, P Diddy or Ben Afflec instead of Colin Farrel, Ewan Mcgreggor, or someone from the British Isles.

That aside, the trailer looks rather sweet. I get the feeling of it being a Horror - Action flick, with the setting and involvement of Heaven and Hells influence on Earth providing a plot.

Still looks like a Fantasy Matrix to me. :D

Try here for more info on Hellblazer. John Constantine (the principal character) is a total bastard in every way, who just happens to be british. He's not only from Hellblazer, but also made cameo appearances in several other comics (Sandman, Swamp Thing, and others). Fan's are upset because casting Keanu in that role is like casting Elmo to play Darkness in a Legend remake. He's way too clean-cut pretty-boy, and just isn't snarled enough to play John Constantine. The fact that Keanu was cast for that role makes it painfully obvious that the absolutely amazing storyline of Hellblazer (easily one of the greatest modern comics of all time) isn't the least bit intact.

It's not Matrix-like at all, unless Keanu = Matrix (and to some he does, although I still think of Bill & Ted when I see him on the screen).

I think this sums it up pretty good (pilfered from Nexeus' post about the Doom movie):

I stand corrected. :) Only the visual effects and special effects reminded me of the Matrix, though as they are so popular, I guess its widespread to begin with.

If Farrel ever became James Bond, it would be the only disaster to ever spawn 3 seasons worth of Saturday Night Live jokes. (sorry for hijack)

Love Farrel as I do I have to agree... He's too... Tough, I guess...
Bond has to be charming, not a tough guy. I personally detest Brosnan (and his writers) for the direction Bond has moved in... Wtb Connery as bond again, I don't care if he's old and senile... All praise Connery!
*A warning: Anyone who says Moore will be shot on sight... Moore sucked! Yes you are entitled to think otherwise, but it will be wrong. No matter how good your arguments it will be very, very, very wrong!
Freedom of speech and all that, it will still be wrong!*

See Colin Farrel woulda made a decent Constantine. Constantine is a bit rough around the edges, smokes about as many cigarettes as he needs(thats lots), is a bit of a guy who can do teh magic, frequently converses with both demons & angels... I so fear the part in this movie where Constantine utters the word "Whoah!"

If ya wanted an American for the role I got a great one - Dennis Leary. He'd be able to pull off Constaintine's Gruff go eff yourself attitude!

Damn Boinky, ya nailed that one on the head twice. Colin Farrel would do well as Constantine. If it's to be a brit actor and I had to pick though, I think I'd rather see Hugh Laurie. He has the scruffy and worn look, that attitude, the rasp. Yeah, he's playing Dr. House at the moment, but he's done a thousand other (and better) things, and his American accent on "House" isn't his own. And yeah, that show has it's problems, but I can't help but like it when I regularly hear lines like "Well you know how nuns are - once you take out their IUD's, they bounce right back."

I could easily see Dennis Leary as Constantine as well, just because he's a smoking, drinking, worn-and-tossed looking asshole... and he's still likeable on top of it all.
