Med Kits, Nano Kits, and AO

Postby Firia » Sun Jul 20, 2003 2:46 am

Last week, I visited a friend of mine. He just recently got Star Wars Galaxies, and offered to let me play it (I play AO occationaly on his account).

Now, I was running around doing things. I was a doctor. I ran out into an area, and started shooting little animals. I asked, "Is there healing kits like in AO?" I asked not because I had to heal right that second, but I remembered what it was like when I tried out Everquest; you sat down to get back mana and health. Sure there were special means to get health and mana back, but it was special. I was worried. Popping a squat for 30 minutes is not my idea of a good time.

I've found that the hassle free Medical kits and Nano Kits (I mean the ones that you use when you're not in combat) is part of my appeal to AO. I don't have to sit down for longer than 5 seconds, and I don't have to jump through flaming hoops just to get my health and nano's. Granted there are better more advanced ways to heal and recover, but that's very optional.

(I got pretty bored with SWG pretty quickly)

Don't you have to dig in the ground to find it?

*Remebers PVP comic*

So how do you heal in SWG?

I didn't do any digging, :P I started up with a needle. And, I may have used it twice. And then I shut it off, and left. :P

Medic, Artisan, and Entertainer are for hardcore players. Take a LOT of time. You want some quick fun, Marksman or Brawler. You want to spend some time, but not alot? Scout.

Simple as that.

my point is;
I don't like having to sit my buns to the ground longer than a couple of seconds for health. :P
I like to drop some creds, and be on my way with the goods. Then spend 5 seconds healing whenever I need it, as opposed to however long it takes to regenerate lost health or whatever.

AO is just so hassle free. :P

(Litterly when my friend Zach showed me how fast it is to heal, my reaction was "WHOA!") :mrgreen:

short fun being for marksman or brawler? shame on you, that is untrue. lol

the grind to gain a level in your skilltree is so severe and boring (and grouping lowers the amount of xp each person gets, so that is not a option) that it makes me wonder why they made grinding hurt so much. i mean sometimes a grind is good, sometimes bad in a good way, but this grind is just painful. :P

go kill womprats and wussy spawn or diseased bobcats for all eternity to reach your level. over and over, and over and over, and over and over. tough spawn needs groups, but that lowers your xp. why bother? I get more for killing a diseased bobcat then for killing a dewback in a group.

combat is boring and lame after the first few hours. At least AO gives it purpose and gives you a rush. I need to fight to level so I can get this new helmet on or this gun, and that doctor is healing me but it may not be enough to keep me going in which case I lose 700k xp. In SWG you can have the best stuff at the moment you start if you have a friend who is a crafter. Strategy is also dead. Here for example the Enforcer tanks while doctor heals and crat tries to calm the extra enemies so you can worry about one at a time? not in SWG. In swg it is: everyone fights and hopefully the zerg rush works. no doctor is going to heal you b/c the heals aren't worth much and they don't want to sit on their buns making healkits ad infinitum again. You fight, half of you get knocked out. group waits 60 seconds or so, and then they move on. Hopefully you wake up or they remember you.

in my case they keep forgetting I am there and keep running over half the time. 80 seconds later I can finally get up and I have been thoroughly ditched. thank you lack of defined classes. never had a doctor forget to heal me before that game. never had a group forget about one of its members that severely, but then again these groups can go up to 20 so i guess you can forget one or two people (ie: me)

haven't played in a week though... and they are charging me soon. grrr

is there any good to SWG? I ask that to myself everytime I log on to the game and get disappointed and log off 5 minutes later. :P

I hear very good things for some aspects. ^_^
I ~DO~ like that combat does not = improvment.
those of you that have made things in AO (a gun for example) would imagine that if you made enough guns, you'd get better at it. Like, lvl up or some junk. ^_^ But you need to run out and gank something for exp to lvl before you get better.

In SWG's, I HEAR that it's not that way. You make something, and you gradually get better. So that I do like.

It's just to bad my first experiance with SWG's was so dull. ^_^; And there wasn't any hassle-free med-kits. :P cause those kits are a bazillion points for AO. :P

yep, the system does let you gain skill that way. however, it isn't very good for anyone at all.

let me give examples.

you are a soldier. you grind for hours upon hours upon hours killing the same mobs around town (newbie mobs. everything else is too tough and takes too long to kill for the effort to be worthwhile). 1000 for level 1, 5000 for level 2, 15000 for level 3 and 70k for level 4 and each monster gives you a whopping 160 to 300. this is going to take awhile. in groups hunting red monsters you get 100 xp a kill b/c the xp distributes amongst the group equally for the most part though you get more the more damage you do. Now you are done with that one weapon skill. another 2 weapon skills to do now that you are newbie in and then you still need to finish the grind that is ranged support.

for the crafter it stinks just as bad. you have to pump out things over and over in a clickfest that makes UO look like a cakewalk, and you gain a bunch of xp for one kind of crafting. then you boost that one kind. the crafter tree has four trees, each one consisting of four boxes, and is a worse grind then the marksmen professions are. Not fun.

AO may not make much sense, but at least when you level you can boost anything you want. I prefer it. I tried crafting in SWG, and I won't ever try it again. that game is for the hardcore only who have no lives. there is no way I could even sell my goods unless I was a elite skilled crafter and that requires at least twelve hours a day of hardcore clicking for a week and a half to two (maybe less if you know exactly what you are doing). I have a life thank you (not much of one, but still) SWG.

oh, and I forgot. it gets worse. each weapon specific tree in the marksman branch can go into elite areas (like you become pistol using dude level 4, and open up a tree of 4 branches all about pistols. the pistoleer elite starting box for the advanced tree needs 125k xp, and they go higher. in the end you need 7.6 million xp to finish this tree with its 4 branches, with each kill giving 160 to 300 xp. do the math yourself. I'm too tired at 11pm. :P lol.)

the game was advertised as casual gamer heaven, and it is far from it. this stuff will take you a long time to fill out.

and this is what I am angry about. there is no reason to do it. why bother? there is not content but this, and when you are a elite skillwise you are still a wuss and easy to kill since your hitpoints never increase. The game was supposed to be about the endgame. leveling was what you did the first month of gameplay. then the true game was available to you. nto now. apparently the developers said "frell content" and made the leveling the only thing to do. and the leveling was easier in beta. they made it ten times harder b/c there was nothing else. (for comparison. you could make that 7.6 million xp in pistol advanced from one krayt dragon hunt in beta 3 before launch).

the game is a total fraud.

I sure wouldn't mind the ability to improve trades and other skills in AO through use other than combat though. ^_^

The two combined would be nice.
For trade it works out kinda like that. Sorta. Still takes forever and a half to lvl via making things (last I played that is). And I heard on Talk Deviant that the developers made it impossable to lvl via trade skills now. You stop 1 exp away from where you need to be unless you kill something.

But I mean, it'd be nice if through sneaking around a bit, my sneak would raise on it's own a point or two just because I practice it's use alot. Or whatever. Practice makes perfect. ^_^

Of course in a perfect world, there wouldn't be any exploits for that either. ^_^;
