Why Did you pick the profession you are?

Postby *Anthony Star* » Tue Nov 12, 2002 7:54 am

When I play Rpgs, I tend to pick a class and a charcter that is nothing like me, its better for RP, to be something iam not...

Lets see iam an engineer, that uses MA, short, short blonde hair, with one hell of a bot...

Lets see about this.... Iam not short, iam not blonde, i dont have short hair, and I cant build anything without duct tape... and i cant beat up anything with my hands because am such a damn whimp :P that pretty much sums it up....

So, why did you pick your profession?

My first and highest level character, an Adventurer, I picked for the sole purpose of turning into a leet. Pretty simple, but it was my first and top goal in AO for a long while since Vil bribed me into playing by getting me to listen to GSP through winamp and with cute leet pics. Behold, the power of small fuzzy creatures. O.o
Destiny "Nyxelle" Stych
Oralia "Lilita" Siwinski
Natasha "Kanti" Carnalla
Destiny "Meilien" Dellamora

...And numerous other low level alts.

Well.. depends really.

I have several established "personas" who have their own personality, style, etcetera.

But since I'm "sezmra", we'll focus on that one.

Sez is the troublesome sort. My profession(agent) deals more with the fact *I* personally enjoy variety. It just happen to fit in with her personality as a sneaky, sly chick.
For instance, she was also my rogue in EQ, the first time around.

I played an MA (Smakkit) to lvl 41, rerolled and played to 50-something.
AS Tarryk will agree this was BORING! I wanted to do some cool stuff.
I tried an MP, an Agent, an Adv, an Enf etc. Finally I settled with the fixer. As soon as I saw the fixer grid I decided "Sorry Smakkit. You're an alt"

The grid nanos (Saved my team's asses more than once), the run buffs, the best HoT's available, and not least the NCU buffs. I don't have GA and I don't want it. I had a Mk II nano but I gave it to Sharonne. Sure I'll never be Uber without it but it looks STUPID! I can do the damage but 1750 hp won't cut it at lvl 99.

At first none of my chars had any personality at all but since joining Desert Winds I've been roleplaying a lot and Fikksit has become the outwardly nice but secretly ruthless guy I enjoy playing. His real agenda is another matter :) Suffice to say he's a good guy. Really.

Ah why did I decided to play Sharonne as a fixer? Because I liked the idea of getting information. I'm curious, always has been, always will be and I hate secrets. A hacker I thought, will be able to go places no other profession can.. I was right *points to the fixergrid*. Sharonne is also me with an SMG (pray that never happens in RL). I just love the sound of a burst hitting a mob square in the chest and see the bl.....*ahem* Anyway.. *decides to end this quickly* that is why I play Sharonne as a fixer..

When AO first hit shelves, I leapt into a fixer class, thinking that it sounded cool.

I scrapped it inside 6 hours when I heard everyone yelping and begging for a doctor. No-one wanted to be one because you didn't actually fight.

I thought "hey, that's me. hang-back-and-heal." So I went doctor.

Loved it, but I kinda fubared Tarryk up as a doc, spent the "big" IP reset very poorly. So I switched to MA.

HUGE mistake. Martial Arts is Boring with a capital SNORE; I miss the action and stress of a doctor, especially a teamed doctor. Even solo, you gotta stay on your toes at all times, and you also have the potential to kick some serious ass.

I'm going back to the "old" Tarryk very soon. Rerolling to a Doc with MA proficiency. I miss the old days. :)

LOL, 'Maul! :p

Though I experimented with a few other classes before, including *gasps* boring MA and *smiles* funny dual-wielding swords Advy, I was toying with the Fixer idea for a while already, wondering what would suit me best for a truly RP char. Fond memories of the netrunner I had played in Cyberpunk for more than 3 years, also, were drifitng in my mind, and I wanted to try something similar. The whole hacking stuff, being able to grid at will, and to run fast as well (kinda impatient gal, am I)... The fact, also, that I liked the way things could evolve for such a char... and as usual with me, before I had even really decided, I had already begun to build my little story in my head, so... This was the birth of this crazy little Fixer I now am.

Okay, okay, I admit that I find especially funny to see such a thin little woman walk around carrying a gun twice larger as her. I miss the sound of my old Kerans when bursted bullets would crash against enemies. The Gammas are nice, but they just like the right... sound ;)

Can't say I really *resemble* Dem'. Erm, at least, I'm certainly not living with a dead Fixer withing my head LOL But I like to tinker with comps, am a real internet addict, wish there would be a Grid for real (gah, especially now... 2h train every day to go to work :?)... heh, well, guess I'm a nerd. This doesn't fit *that* bad with the Fixer. Ne?
I'm the best in what I do - and what I do ain't pretty.

I have so many alts that I decided to not even use any of my characters' names for this board... Yeah, I have that many. Let's just say I started on RK 2, filled up the server with alts, then heard about the cool stuff on RK 1(Read: Gridstream) and decided to come here...and yeah, I've filled up all my slots on this one too.

I guess my main would be a neutral(ouch) nanomage(ouch) nanotech(ouch) who is only level 40(again, ouch). Usually in games and whatnot, I like the guys who are super-strong without any kind of magic or anything. Of course, in AO everyone uses nanos. Also I've recently gotten into a mage trip, because explosive death is fun. I always did like the guys who had severe advantages and severe disadvantages...

In real life, I guess I sorta resemble him, but only in terms of class and style. Yeah, I tend to stick towards the back ranks when in a group irl, and I can be pretty quiet and off to myself most of the time. Also the entire long hair thing gives me a bit of a magey look, I think. :P

Now that I think about it...I've not taken off my main's hood in so long, I forgot if he even HAS long hair...

I choose a fixer because it sounded like a nice mix of differnent things. I really didn't know much about it but I thought it sounded best. I'm in no way an uber fixer who utilizes the best of the proffesions ablilities, except for the grid :D

Ok , 5 months before i started playing AO, i was playing everquest, and it sucked up a lot of time, and i was a dark elf wizard. tough goin from the start. but hey, if its not a challenge, its not worth the time. Well, hehehehe ... i had music to do and stuff to draw, and it wasnt my account i was playing on. so bleh, the password changed and im not there anymore.

I have played anarchy online for over a year, and Nancuba is my only other character. I played, then took a break, played, then took a break. Her status went in leaps and bounds.

But to tell you the truth, she would have been a PHAT ASS NANOTECH if it werent for the dislike of bugs and **** ups that happened as the game approached pure stability. AO NEVER crashes my comp these days, but playing a nanotech with few friends for support during the early stages was rough, and to tell you the truth, i still dont play her these days.

Until gridstream came to my knowledge, i was prepared to give up mmorpg'ing altogether, but one day i decided to just play ao for its community and parties, and I found it had a scene, cuz here in boise there is SHIIITE for scene. I started the engie profession and was astounded (blown out of the water) as to the possibilities for enjoyment, self accomplishment and .... stuff! Engies R00L and thats all there is to it! (all other classes rool too, just how you play them  ) but still, nancuba will be my money making character (Nanoprogramming, baby!) and epiphonic is my main.

I never thought that i would start playing my own music on the web live, to people who not only share my addiction (severe addiction) to mmorpg's but have a love for new music as well. Tarryk, thanks for bringin me back man!.

Im seriously verklempt! talk amongst yourselves!

I am a NT as well as Nancuba and when I started playing it was a totally new experience for me. AO is the first MMOG I have played (of 2 reasons, I am a tech guy and thus none of the games on the market were compelling to me, and second I didn't have a VISA card before hehe).

So I read up on AO for about 1 month prior to beginning playing and the game seemed to be all I ever wanted.

Since I am a tech guy who watches tons of sci-fi movies/series and have a great belief in new technology the profession was given, nano technician, for one or more reasons. For those who remembered DeusEx, nanotechnology was one important element. Since I loved the game and AO seemed to contain many elements, including nanotechnology the name itself of the profession was enough for me.
The other reason was that on the paper a nano tech would be independent of weapons and have a variety of badass nanos that would cause direct damage.

I love my profession even though we are not the best damage dealer in the game (which we are supposed to be if you look at the description), but I have some hope left in FC to fix this, so that we once and for all can go out and nuke the hell out of everything ;)

I have to admit that I had some vision in my head (mainly due to what was said in the description and so on) of the NT beeing a researcher type of guy that created / developed new cool nano formulas that only him could use.

Then we have the challenge of beeing a NT. It's a very tough profession to start up with for a first character and I have had a rough time when I got here. Luckily I had a few friends who were already playing that helped me out with tips&tricks, but still it was a hard profession to play as. Only after lvl100 I have found great enjoyment because after lvl100 one can finally look after yourself and not be to dependant on others. This was the breakpoint where the NT went from beeing a hardass, difficult character to play, to a character which actually could meet up with other professions with damage and such.

One thing I hated though was that as a NT I was unwanted in any team in my lower levels and this is still today the fact. People have this flawed impression that NT's suck and rather exclude them from teams. I say we may be weak healthwise, but give us a proper tank, some healing and distance to the target and we will nuke the crap out of any mob. We are not made to tank (which seems like the only thing people think of when choosing players in lower levels) but we are made to do damage! Together with roots and nukes we are a deadly combination ;)

Today, about 6 months later I am lvl184 and a proud nano technician, and can never think of ever switching profession! I have become a true technician and can finally (with some buffs) create nanos (up to ql215), virral eggs, and some other stuff. I am still working on upping all my tradeskills but it takes time since those are blue skills hehe.

______
Some quotes from the official website:
"Direct nano technology is their game, and they are easily recognisable from the ever-present cloud of nano-bots surrounding their person. Scientific geniuses that make the more advanced nano technology seem so easy, other people conceive it as magic."

"The Nano-Technician is a highly specialised profession focused on one thing; dealing the most amount of damage to the target in the shortest amount of time. He is all about nano programs, always holding a large variety of damaging nanos in his arsenal. The Nano-Technician also has access to extra programs that enhance the effectiveness of his attacks to a fine and deadly art."

"The power to turn something into a smoldering pile of ashes is a great power indeed. It's even better when that power is at the tips of your fingertips. Add to that a ranged weapon of choice, and you'll soon familiarise people with the functions of the reclaim terminal. Either that or sending people running like crazy to escape your wrath. All this and more is the destiny of the Nano-Technician. Our nano programs are able to cover the full range of damage types; from chemical to melee, cold to fire. We will always find a way to damage to our prey, no matter their armor or level of skill. Some people say mind over matter. Well I say mind creates matter. As well as hurling any conceivable type of damage towards an opponent, as a Nano-Technician you will be able blind, root an opponent on the spot, and even prevent them from attacking. By executing programs on youself, your ability in the uses of nano technology will be increased. Matter creates, matter destroys and it is at our disposal as a Nano-Technician."

I want a hat. ^_^

In other news, I first started as a Soldier cause I wanted to rock shit with guns. Little did I know that going pistol akimbo (at the time) sucked nards. ^_^;

I later (50 some odd levels) got fed up with the lack of healing ability that came with being a soldier, and rolled up as a Doc. ^_^ Yup, they were in high demand, and much fun! They didn't require a ton of fire power, but could throw down if they really needed to. =D

There were good times with my doc. ^_^ To bad she's in vaccation off world for awhile, ne? ^_^

Why...

Postby Kaiur » Thu Nov 21, 2002 3:34 am

Out of Character transmission from Kaiur:

I liked stealth. I also thought that sniping would be of more use. Then again, I'm barely level 11, so maybe I'm doing things slowly. I should reroll because I messed up a few times with my IP, but I can't find someone to hold all of my gear, or give me some bucks :)
