I love steam sales

Postby Failia » Wed Dec 26, 2012 12:15 pm

Well, imagine my surprise when I found TSW for sale on Steam, at 25% off.

Well, as it's now a one-time purchase MMO, I couldn't pass it up. I added it to my library this morning. I'm still quite into DC Universe Online but now I can pop in anytime I want. Hope to see you there!

Damn you Steam an your delicious deals on games I have never heard of and will most likely never play!
But it's $3.99!!

A friend of mine and I were looking for something different to play multi-player the other night so I said, well check out my Steam profile and see what we have in common. A few moments later he exclaims in Mumble, "&%#@, dude you have like 200 games in there!" I hung my head in shame. :'(

Some people collect string...

I only have 98 games on steam....

And 73 games on GOG....

And a few elsewhere (GameFly, GamersGate, boxed games...)

Collecting games is a fun game :)

Meh, Steam sucks. I'm a fan of The Sims games and have had Sims 3 since it first came out. I only got one of the expansions for it. So, Steam is having a big sale on all the other addons and expansions for Sims 3 so I thought I would go ahead and buy the lot. I try to buy the content and I get a message that I don't have the game. I hunt around on forums and it seems that unless you buy the base game through Steam its not compatible with Steam addons. FU Steam, I'm not buying the game a second time just because I bought the collector's box on release. I don't need to play Sims that bad to just blow 15 euros on a game I already own. Its a really stupid move on Steam's part.

I'm on Arcadia, but people are on various servers. Aside from home dimension, your server doesn't matter, as all you need to do to group/hang out with someone is add them to your friend's list, right click their name, and select Meet-up

People said the same about Origin. Is a valid issue. I also try not to buy from steam if I can. I prefer boxesd. I know of the pluses. But the limitations are as you say, and the dl times are off the hook. I really did not want to have to buy Xcom from steam, but had little choice in the end.

The problem is that the way the game launches and how it runs is completely different than if you were using a non-steam game. Steam games always have Steam running in the background with them. I personally usually only buy games on Steam. There are of course a few exceptions as they're not available on Steam. There's also a way that you can associate your game with Steam so you can use the DLC content...at least it's that way for some games. I don't know about Sims3 in your case.

Any game with a CD key (that is on steam obviously) you can add to your steam if you bought it from somewhere else.

Yes, you can indeed add a link to the game in Steam, which I really don't care about at all, but there are several games that you can't purchase the expansions for from Steam without having to also have purchased the original game from Steam as well. Steam insists that you have an invalid serial number. I can also confirm that these same games you can't buy an expansion retail and have it work with the base game that you have through Steam.

Anyway, my whole point is to inform my friends here of one of the pitfalls of Steam so no one wastes their money assuming that they can purchase what should be a compatible game/expansion from different sources. Some times it works, some times it doesn't. If I had known that when I bought The Sims 3 I would have just bought it through Steam rather then gotten a special edition version from GameStop.

I'm still chugging away at Kingsmouth. I rolled Illuminati as that was what my questionaire had said I was when i filled it out all those months ago.

As for steam, so far I've gotten:

    Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
    Transformers: War for Cybertron
    Left 4 Dead Bundle
    L.A. Noire
    Alice Madness Returns
    The Secret World,
    Mass Effect Collection
    Torchlight II

Cost me about $100 so far. Since some of them are a collection that's...10 games thus far. Curse Steam and their good deals. I bought a bunch of games the last time there was a sale. Going through Arkham Asylum and City as a result of that.

Gawd, the summer sales killed me. Added a bunch more to my list:

Final Fantasy VII
Assassin's Creed II: Deluxe Edition
Assassin's Creed Revelations - Gold Edition
Strike Suit Zero Mega Bundle
Sleeping Dogs,
Alan Wake Bundle (Summer 2012)
Mirror's Edge
Dishonored (ROW), Dishonored: Dunwall City Trials, Dishonored - Void Walkers Arsenal DLC, Dishonored - The Knife Of Dunwall DLC,
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gold
Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package
Dungeon Siege 3
Bastion
Borderlands 2 ROW
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition
System Shock 2
The Last Remnant
The Walking Dead: 400 Days

Brings my grand total up to about 75 games or so. I'm still baffled by some members on Steam though. I was looking at other people's profiles and saw one guy with over 1300 games. I'm just going through Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate edition right now. Finished the extra content in Origins, Leliana's Song and Awakening. Going to work on The Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt after that....then to decide on what game to move on to next...I might go back into DC Universe Online for a bit (been a few months since I was in there) or even take a peek at TSW again. Still haven't decided. Might even just work on more single player games.

Think I managed to keep my spending under $100 this time.

I added mine up and it came to $87.65. Most of the games I got were $5 and under.

I got TSW and a few others on the sales, I have been running around the Kingsmouth so far. I focused on pretty big titles this time so while I did not buy a lot I still spent around 100€ on the sale.
