Today, October 30, 2008. Is the 70th anniversary of the airing of, what is probably the most famous radio broadcast of all time. The Mercury Theater on the Air’s adaptation of H.G. Wells’s, War of the Worlds. It was also the biggest, most monumental and the most gosh darned brilliant Halloween prank in history.
The show scared the wits out of over a million listeners and was said to have caused panic in the streets through out New York and New Jersey. People actually believed that the Earth was being invaded by Martians.
Somewhere I have a recording of the broadcast. (on vinyl) It’s been many years since I’ve last listened to it. Hearing the news of the anniversary makes me want to dig it up and hear it again.
