It's hard to feel bad for this dirty hippie when he gets pwned by this cop.

I've noticed a growing trend in cyclists is that they like to hold montly rides like this. I have to say I'm against this. You block the traffic and cause problems. Since you can't make the minimum speed requirment for a road anything like this would be considered a parade, and you need to get a permit.

I don't see the cyclist in the wrong here. Most traffic laws classify cyclists as motor vehicles regardless of any minimum speed in the city/state you're talking about. If you bike on the sidewalk, you can get a ticket for it in WA state. If you bike in the road, you risk being struck by vehicles (you always lose, regardless of who's morally or legally right if that happens) and you can impede traffic when motorists don't know how to drive around cyclists or feel they can't.

It's just incredibly hard trying to balance the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on our roads and trails so there's a lot of conflict and anger between the different groups. The thing that really stands out for me on that video clip and the article attached to it is that the cop basically body-checked the guy off the bike and then wrote in his report that the cyclist ran right into him, causing them both to fall down.

The cyclist was thrown in jail for 26 hrs without hospitalization and charged with "attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct". The cop's been stripped of his badge and put on probation pending an investigation that started after that video showed up.

It's not right to clog up the streets with an 'unorganized' march like this without a permit (although it's debatable if you actually need one depending on what city/state you're in), but that doesn't excuse the cop or anyone like him in law enforcement not doing their sworn duty to protect the law and the people by acting like the guy did.

This video is not funny. Don't laugh at it.

Edit: Did some more poking around, go read this: http://gothamist.com/2006/01/11/judge_says_bike.php if you still think the cop's justified here.

I don't really have an opinion on bikes in the road. I'm not technically against it, but I do tend to get ticked off when a cyclist is forcing me to drive 10mph and I'm late for work. I want to get in front of him and coast at 1mph just to force him to walk his bike.

But none of that has any bearing. I don't care what might have preceded the incident, the cop in question knows what he needs to do. He needs to call out to the biker beforehand if he thinks something is wrong, and he needs to make the biker aware that he needs to stop immediately. He did none of this, and by the obvious display in the video, he quite purposefully failed to warn the cyclist to stop. It was very clear that his intention was to assault and injure the cyclist before he knew what was coming.

It was a malicious act of violence. I don't care what you think about "hippies", or how much I might agree with you. I think violent, doltish bullies in authoritative uniforms are far, far worse, and need to be wiped from the planet.

I've read several stories on this, one that said the officer was busted to a desk clerk pending an internal investigation, and one that says he's had nothing done to him and that he's still got his badge and his gun.

Even if he was busted, it's not enough. No investigation is needed. The cop needs to be fired and deported. He's a piece of s*&%, unworthy of even calling himself a civilian, much less a policeman.

Yup and it's guy like that who make ppl hating police even more, authorities guys, any name you want call it.

I'm not about that job at all for a lot of reasons I just totaly dislike that, but there is some great guys who save lifes it just bring respect even if you are not about authorities. That sort of bastard just bring hate. The problem it's you always see bad things happening on tv, rarely the good ones and the bad acts bring more attention by the most of ppl than good acts.

I'm not defending anything or anyone, it's just sad to see things like that happening too many times and too often.

The best part is that this particular incident was the NYPD, who don't exactly have a sterling reputation. lol

My brother in law is a Fayetteville police officer in Arkansas, and he's such a great guy. My sister has informed me that after having married him she has a different perspective on police. She didn't like them before but now she thinks they're great, with an odd sense of humor that seems to come with having to deal with the crap of society every day. That officer in the video is very very wrong and makes people like my brother in law look like jerks when they are only doing the job that no one else wants. Yeah, some of them are power-tripped, some of them are just jerks but that happens in every job. Their job just puts it out there more than, say, an office manager with a chip on his shoulder. They are only people and to classify a group of people because of a bunch of dumbasses is just wrong.
