James Doohan, 'Scotty' on 'Star Trek,' boldly went into the stars this weekend as his cremated ashes were sent into space aboard a rocket. (April 30) ...

He was one of my favorite actors, it is sad to know he is gone, but his memory will live on in Treckies forever.

Not really.. the trip reportedly only cost his family like... $1000? They only sent a few grams of his ashes (Think ashes of your nose for example) and they didn't stay out in space. They came back to earth on the rocket. Basically they can say his ashes were in space, but they're not there now.

Well considering that there is no air in space, hence you cant' inhale to smell.
but if you could, my guess would be a slight mineral'ish smell (think rock/mineral/metal/glass/ice dust etc.) if the concentration was high enough.

Air is a gas. :) Your lungs inhale gas. If space had gas (um), it would potentially have a scent. :) But that scent would likely be a localisation of whatever produced said gas.

Poor trek man. I wonder how many of the originals are left... or how long they have left. Shatner is ancient but still kicking. I don't think they have long, unfortunately. ^^;

Space isn't empty. Hydrogen is everywhere. It's just spread thin. Theres also omnipresent dust. Stars tend to throw off alot of matter dispite their great gravity wells. Thus the solar winds that keep getting mentioned.
